Not for image backups. File & Folder backups offer this since they're file-level backups, but images backup are block-level backups, which might be why that capability isn't available there.

 

Right. I would assume short answer here would be that it would need to mount the backups to search them to know which backups to mount. If that makes sense. So likely not possible.

 

But you can mount images where you can search/view files. I hope Macrium is looking into the feasability of search. It'd be a neat addition. They've successfully implemented some pretty tricky features in the past. I think I'll submit that as an enhancement idea.

 

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the point, but you'd have to mount all of them to search them. At this point, you've already mounted them all. I'm not trying to badmouth your idea. I'm just not sure what the goal is here. And if I don't get it, they may not either.

 

Or maintain an index.

 

You say that... but I don't expect that it is the same thing. Maybe if you just wanted to search the MFT for filenames (or whatever filesystem) then maybe.

 

I'm not here to design the idea. I just asked it's possible. I will submit to them and it'll be on them to decide.

The "missing feature" you are describing falls more in the realm of a temporal database than a file system.

Where File and Folder backups are concerned, Reflect already records each increment's details in the corresponding log. You can determine where a file appeared/disappeared/changed by scanning the logs.

Image files are another matter. Cataloguing those three characteristics (creation/deletion/change) through an image sequence would be a seldom used resource. A lot of dev effort for limited benefit. And, in any event, it's just a matter of rolling up your sleeves and doing a modest amount of work using any available search to hunt through the image set. And note that if you're searching through a set of many increments or differentials, you don't necessarily have to work forward or backward through every one until you've found the target . You can do a dichotomizing search where you progressively cut the set in half.

 

Greetings from the "Dark Side." Your understanding is correct, those limitations continue to exits. Searching image points work well but finding when files first appeared in an image is still a goal.

 

Regards Macrium and other backups, it doesn't work to well if as happened to my neighbors business the backup is next to the computer when the building burned. This has me concerned about incremental backups as they must be continuous and therefore likely are next to or attached all the time. Would the best other than full backups which are time consuming, be differential backups, or how do you get around this issue?

 

If you're using Incremental backups (at a rate of not being able to remove them from the premises), using your network as a source to a remote disk works very well (as long as the target volume is out of your structure.

We're sure it won't come back. You can do something else. Install Reflect Home in trial mode, put the date forward more than 30 days and run Reflect, it will tell you that the trial period is over, switch it to Free mode and restore the correct date. Now you have Reflect Free v8.0.6161. This is a completely legal operation and is not a hack.

 

It worked great for me too. Although there's not much difference for my uses. I only wanted to be able to get any updates/bug fixes, since version 7 is no longer being maintained.

I still wonder why macrium doesn't put the link in an easy to find spot on their webpage. They only link to old version.

It's almost as if they don't want people using it which makes no sense.

 

Macrium’s policy is to support the previous major version for at least a year after the release of the next major version. Reflect V8 launched on May 17, 2021, so V7 will be supported for at least another 7 months. I say “at least” because V6 got a couple of updates even after V7 had been around for a year.

Reflect is beautiful, there are no words, we are very grateful to the developer. I'm always tempted to buy a license, especially after a couple of whiskey doubles, but my wife hides the credit cards in time

When i created a boot menu for MR it downloaded some files nearly 1gb of size, now when it is done i would like to uninstall thoose files but still keep the menu.

1: Is it possible?
2: Where do i find them to do it?

 

Yes, this is possible without affecting the boot menu

In the directory C:\Boot\macrium or C:\ProgramData\Macrium\Reflect
delete the folders "Windows AIK" and "Windows Kits".
Tip:
To avoid downloading every time, download pe10_1709x64.zip file via Download Agent and save it to a non-system drive, and point to it when creating/re-creating the boot menu. After creating it, delete it again, as described above.
