I ask this because I've had two USB hubs and the same thing happened to the same port on both of them. I've got a Seagate BUP Slim external drive that I use as a destination for creating backups. Then I copy the backup to another identical drive connected to the same USB hub. Initially things work fine; then the port with the destination drive plugged into it starts to fail and the backups fail as a result. Both drives are okay because when I plug them into different ports they both work normally. When I make backups I don't have both drives powered up at the same time so I don't see how it could be an overload issue.

Has anything like this happened to anyone? It just seems like a very odd coincidence that both hubs would have exactly the same issues after using them to create backups.

Are they the same brand and model? In that case it could be a defect that is more likely than coincidental. It would be extremely unlikely that software could be doing that.

Actually no. One was a NIAO-CHAO brand and the other was StarTech. I wasn't that surprised the NIAO-CHAO started giving me problems but StarTech is supposed to be a lot better quality with a price tag to match.

I also thought it's very unlikely that just saving backups could do it; but it's also a very strange coincidence. That's why I thought I'd see if it happened to anyone else; if not, it probably is just coincidence, strange as it is.

Meh, StarTech is ok but isn't the greatest either. Do these Seagate drives require more than a single power input? Maybe they are trying to draw more power than they are getting from the port.

What exactly do you mean by "a single power input?" Both of the hubs I mentioned are self-powered.

The external drives. I have had Seagates in the past that had to be plugged into 2 USB ports.

I had a similar but worse problem that was caused by the CBT driver. The issue was resolved via MR support.
Try opening an admin Command Prompt and run this command -

    REG ADD HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MRCBT /v ExcludeUSB /t REG_DWORD /d 1

    Restart the computer.

If it doesn't work, to revert to the default setting -

    REG ADD HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MRCBT /v ExcludeUSB /t REG_DWORD /d 0

If by self powered you mean solely powered by usb hub with no option to connect an external power adapter (a typical mobile phone charger for example) to hub like below option then there is your reason especially if the drives are more than 2TB in size.
