    Hi tntharmon,

Before you start, please unzip hijackthis to a separate folder. The program will make backups in the folder in the folder it's in.
These easily get lost in a Temp folder.

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://server224.smartbotpro.net/7search/?new-hkcu

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://default-homepage-network.com/start.cgi?new-hklm
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://server224.smartbotpro.net/7search/?new-hklm

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msbb] c:\windows\msbb.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [XqIy0] C:\windows\temp\XqIy0.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ClrSchLoader] C:\Program Files\Lycos\IEagent\Loader.exe

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msmc] C:\WINDOWS\System32\msmc.exe

    O16 - DPF: {1D2DCA0D-B30F-40AD-9690-087105F214EC} (IEDial Class) - http://fr4-download.nocreditcard.co...ieaccess2XP.cab

    Download and run: http://www.spywareinfoforum.com/~merijn/files/CWShredder.exe
Use the Fix button and follow the instructions you will receive.

    Then reboot and delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\msmc.exe
    C:\Program Files\Lycos\IEagent <= entire folder
    c:\windows\msbb.exe
    C:\windows\temp\XqIy0.exe

Pieter- thanks for the guidance. will follow instructions and post results this evening. I already downloaded available patches - which you probably saw from the log. Hope this kills this bugger. :ninja:

    Pieter-

while I was away from my computer, it was busy. there was a lycos sidesearch icon on my desktop, as well an icon for "desktop.ini" that contained the following information:
    [LocalizedFileNames]
    Windows Media Player.lnk=@C:\WINDOWS\inf\unregmp2.exe,-4

never saw it before today. is it OK to delete this? system gives me a warning.

anyway, I followed the steps you outlined but one of the items you asked me to check and fix no longer appeared in the log. it was:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msmc] C:\WINDOWS\System32\msmc.exe

I found the others and "fixed". I then downloaded the shredder and it cleaned stuff up. I then rebooted and deleted the files you stated. In some instances there were several copies of each in different locations.

I am assuming that your site does not spawn pop-ups for "the sheild" or "hacker smacker" so I think I may still be infected. I just ran hijack this again, and here is the log:

more information: I went to your spywareinfo site and did a lot of studying. I visited the pacman list of startup programs. I think I am looking pretty clean at this point except that everytime I reboot, and I run CWShredder, it "removes" something called

    Removed from your system:
    - CWS affiliate: Madfinder

This was after I went through a serious amount of browser security activity to disable all kinds of scripting, active x, and java stuff. 3 hours of study still makes me an amateur. I would love to know this is completely gone. let me know.

    thanks

Can you post a log that was made after this ordeal.
And in CWShredder click Scan only and post the report it makes as well.

    Regards,

    Pieter

will do this evening. I will also be keeping an eye on the string titled:
"CWS continuously comes back after cleaning"
seems somewhat similar to my issue. thanks for your continued support.

    Hi tntharmon,

First bring up TaskManager ( f.e. by using Ctrl-Alt-Del) and stop the process called msgked.exe

Then check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {25F7FA20-3FC3-11D7-B487-00D05990014C} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\mskpkc.dll

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FCADDC14-BD46-408A-9842-CDBE1C6D37EB} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msnkmi.dll

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msmc] C:\WINDOWS\System32\msgked.exe

Then reboot into safe mode and delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\msgked.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\mskpkc.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\msnkmi.dll

Then boot normally and make a new HijackThis log.

    Regards,

    Pieter

    Pieter-
this is the part in the process where the user expresses despair and discouragement, but I know you will see me through. It started with a bad omen - when I went to kill the process in task manager, it wasn't there. then my firewall told me "ms13.tmp" was trying to access the internet. killed the process. checked/fixed with HJT and then I followed the rest of the steps anyway. after the safe boot I found more than one copy of msgked.exe and deleted them, but I didn't find either of the dll files. I did find an "ms13.tmp.exe" that I deleted. after a normal boot I ran HJT and didn't see anything familiar. I then opened a browser to do a google search on that exe file to see how nasty it is. you can guess what happened next: results that didn't quite look like a normal google return, and remarkably similar results on the yahoo search. then pop-ups for hacker smacker and shield when I tried to get to this site, along with browser slowness that heretofore had not been seen. Here is the latest log. It needs merlins wand.

I think this one needs to be treated in safe mode

Better print this out or copy it to notepad so you can read it.
    Boot into safe, run HijackThis.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00A0A40C-F432-4C59-BA11-B25D142C7AB7} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\mskceo.dll

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0982868C-47F0-4EFB-A664-C7B0B1015808} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\mskhhe.dll
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0BA1C6EB-D062-4E37-9DB5-B07743276324} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msdaim.dll
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {447160CD-ECF5-4EA2-8A8A-1F70CA363F85} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msibkd.dll
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {94927A13-4AAA-476A-989D-392456427688} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msjfbl.dll

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {CC916B4B-BE44-4026-A19D-8C74BBD23361} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msedah.dll

Then find all the files in those lines and delete them.

Then boot normally and let me know.

    Regards,

    Pieter

    Hi Pieter-

Followed your instructions. after selecting/fixing in HJT, went looking for those files to delete and didn't find any of them. this made me concerned, so I rebooted in normal mode, downloaded spybot s&d (like I should have to begin with). ran it. It identified in red (mostly bad origin cookies, but some remnants of clientman and other stuff). kept some of the good stuff and blew the rest away. then downloaded patches from bill gates. after a reboot and a fresh run of HJT, here is the log. how do I look?

    Hi Kent-

Evertyhing is working just fine! can't believe it. If I don't have another post in the next 72 hours, please close this thread.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you, Pieter, and the rest of the crew there for what you folks do. Now I understand the analogies used in this space: the war references, the mystical good guys, white hats vs. black hats, etc. If it weren't for the tireless efforts on your part, tens of thousands of people wouldn't be able to use the equipment they paid good money for! not to mention the priceless value of privacy. In addition, your execution is professional, timely, and forthright. You guys do this with style! Being out in the light for everyone to see has its own risks and disadvantages, but in the end, it sure does beat the way the black hats have to operate: like cockroaches hiding in the dark. My hat is off to you guys. Count on my support.

    Tom

    PS for Pieter -
