I use Shadow Protect and store images on an external hard drive. I do full weekly backups and daily incrementals in between those full backups. Everything is scheduled in Shadow Protect. I have enough diskspace on the external drive for about 9 weeks of backup sets. Every week, I manually delete the oldest set to make room for a new full backup. I have a directory specifically for my SP images and I have a subdirectory within that directory which contains the original baseline backup from when I first purchased the computer about 18 months ago.

So, I just fired up file explorer to delete a backup set. I found the entire SP directory was empty and the subdirectory with the original baseline images was deleted. I have no idea how that happened. I have to assume I did something very wrong, but I can't imagine how I could have done it. BTW, all other directories on the external hard drive were fine.

I opened recuva and I could see that my images had been deleted. Some of the incrementals were recoverable, but the full images were not. I ran chkdsk on the drive and it was normal.

Any ideas as to how or why this could happen?

    Len,

I checked the removal policy for the HD. It's the way it should be.
