London Underground to get line-wide 4G coverage in 2020

The Jubilee line of London's Underground network will be the first to receive total blanket 4G coverage by mid-2020, including on platforms, in station corridors, ticket halls and even through tunnels, according to Transport for London (TfL).

While it's unlikely that users will be able to stream video on demand at all times while underground, TfL said it will allow people to check social media, catch-up with emails before heading to the office and check the latest news.

"The London Underground network is an incredibly challenging environment in which to deliver technological improvements, but we are now well on the path to delivering mobile connectivity within our stations and tunnels," said Shashi Verma, CTO at TfL.
TfL confirmed to IT Pro there is currently no firm roadmap for getting the entire underground service connected with 4G but the aim is to have total coverage by the mid-2020s.

O2 signs agreement with Transport for London to deliver 4G to Jubilee Line

O2 has announced that it has signed an agreement with Transport for London (TfL) that will allow it to deliver full 4G connectivity to the Jubilee Line between Canning Town and Westminster stations. The carrier said that the connectivity will benefit those heading to The O2 venue, who will be able to post about events on social media.

O2 said that it expects the pilot project, which involves other carriers too, to go live in March 2020. It pointed out that the London Underground is used by 5 million commuters every day, but lacks reliable mobile service. It hopes the roll out next year will help remedy the situation.

EE brings 4G connectivity to London Underground's Jubilee Line

EE has announced that tube stations and tunnels on the eastern half of the London Underground’s Jubilee Line now have 4G mobile coverage to keep customers connected. The switch-on is part of a Transport for London (TfL) pilot.

With the launch, platforms and tunnels between Westminster and Canning Town will be covered. The firm said that coverage will extend to ticket halls and corridors within the stations too. Going forward, TfL wants to extend the pilot and cover the remaining platforms and tunnels of the Jubilee Line. This work is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
Marc Allera, CEO of BT’s consumer division, said:

“This is a big step for both connectivity, and for London. We’re looking forward to seeing how our customers use 4G on the Underground – it’s a big step forward for keeping entertained, and keeping in touch. We know how valuable that is, and this switch on aims to pave the way for a wider rollout across the Underground.”

London's Tube will offer full mobile coverage by the end of 2024
Tunnels will also be fitted with full-fiber cables for on street access.

London is expanding 4G mobile coverage across the entirety of the underground. The network, which will span every station and tunnel on the UK capital's busy metro system, will be delivered by the end of 2024. Before then, some of the busiest sections of the tube will get 4G connectivity by the end of 2022, including Oxford Circus, Tottenham Court Road, Bank, Euston and Camden Town stations.

Transport for London has chosen infrastructure provider BAI Communications to build out the network as part of a 20-year concession. Tube tunnels will also be fitted with superfast fiber optic cables to bring full-fiber broadband to more parts of London

The project will see more than 2,000 kilometers of cables installed within tunnels and stations. Alongside the Jubilee Line, TFL has also begun work on the Victoria line as well as within the Northern Line Extension.

London Underground to get mobile coverage boost as Three and EE join BAI network

Three has announced that together with EE, it is joining the BAI Communications (BAI) network which will help provide 4G- and 5G-ready mobile connectivity deep below the streets of London on the Underground. According to the firm, the partnership will allow them to turn London into a ‘truly smart city’.

While today’s announcement mentions Three and EE, all mobile operators will be able to access the London Underground Wi-Fi and BAI’s neutral host mobile network. Customers who do use the network will have uninterrupted coverage while on their trips as well as in stations while waiting for their train.
Commenting on the news, Shashi Verma, Chief Technology Officer at TfL, said:

“It is great that these first two mobile operators have now signed up to provide high-speed, uninterrupted 4G coverage across the London Underground network. Providing mobile connectivity to customers within the tunnels and on platforms across London will help them stay connected more easily and will both provide a long-term revenue stream for TfL and support economic growth across the city.”
