The PBS TV show Nova here in the US aired an episode on various forms of energy storage, including a segment The Battery That Refuses to Explode https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9-cNNYb1Ik which features Mike Zimmerman at Tufts University that has designed a lithium ion battery with a solid polymer serving as the electrolyte. He apparently has founded a company named Ionic Materials to commercialize it. It's pretty impressive, but I don't know about the relative costs and efficiency tradeoffs of various alternatives.

Thanks for a link to that Documentary episode of these. In my work travels while transporting loads of these as a hauler, I never experienced a defect in transit but always wondered how volatile a bulk cargo bunch of those was since they were highly decorated with all sorts of warnings and I had to sign off on a Tip and Tell agreement if they got shifted beyond a certain predetermined threshold. Loved my work being the industrial head I always have been.
