Linux Mint 19 will be offered in multiple flavors including MATE, Xfce and Cinnamon. If you have used Linux Mint Cinnamon in the past or plan to take it for a test drive in the future, you may benefit from application loading improvements in the version of Linux Mint.

The team created a script to measure the performance [...] The script confirmed that Cinnamon's performance was worse than the performance of other versions. The window build and recovery time of Cinnamon was about 26 seconds in total, while it was just 7 seconds for Metacity.

Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon includes improvements to window animations on top of that which improve the performance perception without impacting actual performance.

Faster app-launching in Cinnamon

The development team took some time earlier this year to investigate Cinnamon’s performance when it comes to launching applications. [...]
Here’s how Cinnamon compared to Metacity:

Windows build time: 1s in Metacity, 4s in Cinnamon.

Recovery time: 6s in Metacity, 22s in Cinnamon.

In addition to this, the team also took the opportunity to improve the window animations. Although they weren’t responsible for any delay, they had an impact on perception. The new animations look cleaner and along with the performance improvements they make Cinnamon feel snappier than before.

Last week, the Linux Mint team announced that the betas for the Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce editions of Linux Mint 19 would be made available today. Sticking to that promise, all three versions are available today and also come with a full log of the new features as well as an interesting tidbit regarding the upgrade path from Mint 18.3.

Some of the biggest new features in Mint 19 are the changes made to the update manager. In the past, Mint didn’t select all updates automatically to be installed and it received a lot of backlash for this choice. Now the update manager urges users to use Timeshift to make system snapshots to restore the system if the update manager causes damage to the system when installing updates, this change means that Mint can push all updates to users.

Another big change is that this release ships with Cinnamon 3.8, this should make your system feel snappier because applications launch faster and window rendering is more efficient. The team managed to make Cinnamon operate at the same speed as Metacity - that's about four times quicker!
