You should update your Cinnamon instructions. The latest version 1.6.0 - comes with a Cinnamon 2D session so it can now run on any computer whether or not it has accelerated graphics.

instead of stopping swap its not good you should put a tutorial about setting swappiness value to 10 or 20 %

that means when your 10 or 20 % ram left it start swaping only by then ie

for example you set swapping to 10% and you have 1 gb ram and its reach 921 mb + (91%) on that its start swap

here its explain in better way please check these :)

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwapFaq

    http://askubuntu.com/questions/103915/how-do-i-configure-swappiness

edit: Ubuntu Desktop uses Swap to Hibernate so its needed.

So there is no drawback of enabling it at 10% value

    Mack_Guy,
You've got me beat by a year. I first started using Linux back in 2005 shortly after I signed up for DSL. Prior to that I was on dialup..:ouch: .

On a side note, I'm looking forward to the release of Gnomebuntu (the name is in flux) on Oct. 12th, 2012.

    Later....

    P.S.
Sorry, folks but Ubuntu Gnome Remix (Gnomebuntu) will be released on Oct. 18th, 2012, not the 12th.

There's a beta of it available for download at...

    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGNOME/ReleaseNotes/12.10Beta

should you wish to try it now.

    Later...once again...:).

Way behind both of you in terms of expertise, but then I am much older and slowing down.
First used Ubuntu Gutsy (7.04) in August 2007 dual boot with XP.

Have either of you tried Manjaro ?

I added more info to the guide, I never use the power saving feature "Hibernate", I read "the devs have disabled hibernate because of a known bug up stream." I dont really know about mint on a laptop because I never Installed Mint to a laptop, but I hear the Suspend feature works great, suspend is also disabled by default on a desktop install, dont know about a laptop?

Ill look into this more though..thanks :thumb:
