    Tried Mint 9 x64 livecd
    connections established
    but
error: an invalid or illegal stris specified.

Also founnd windows wireless drivers ndiswrapper - maybe this will help?

at least on MInt 9 it shows Wireless last used: now or 5 min ago

on ubuntu it was always Never

    progrres??

tried Mint 8 x64 live - same story, although this time it asked to access keyring, I chose always allow but...can't open any pages

    can ping on all, though...

I also noticed that mac address here is different from what I've seen in Win7
    I did try different DNS
    4.2.2.1
    8.8.8.8
    8.8.4.4
    No luck,

    as for changing the mac

    sudo ifconfig eth0 down
sudo ifconfig eth0 hw ether xxxxxxx
    sudo ifconfig eth0 promisc
    sudo ifconfig eth0 up

    as well as
    sudo gedit /etc/network/interfaces

    auto eth0
    iface eth0 inet dhcp
    hwaddress ether 01:02:03:04:05:06
    sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

    the results are as follow:

    @Beavenburt

Thanks for mentioning Mepis! This looks really cool. I'm gonna give it a try.

    @Longboard

Thanks for reminding me about Wubi. I forgot about it since you mentioned it to me the first time. Will Wubi work with any distro? Is Wubi free or pay? I clicked on the link to it and it looked like a pay program, not sure, but it would be worth it for what it does. I love the idea of installing it in windows.

Thanks again Longboard!! You are a walking or should I say talking encyclopedia.

    My ordeal has ended today.

Puppy + its derivatives is very nice; but not quite the thing...

This morning I decided to return to the one that struck me as a perfect distro for beginners way back when I thought it was sooo outdated... lacking x64...

    *drumroll*

    PCLOS

I decided to give E17 a spin from a livecd and do not regret it as it is the sole distro that is able to connect to the Interent through my WiFi router.

Absolutely stunned I am and thankful to those who helped me along the cobbled road :)

korben have you tried fedora live cd or open suse live cd as well

try to get connected via your wire connection and get update and then check via wireless

i feel there is some problem in configuration try nspluginwraper

can you tell us about your router little bit more also if it does contain antivirus scanning and you have enabled it.

mack, I did try so many distros I lost count of them.

I know PCLOS is not what linux users consider seriuos linux but I do not care cause it works for me that's what I expect from a system, don' t you ? ;)

So now the plan is to start using PCLOS for some time and when I'm tired of it and only then will I go back to Ubu or Mint.

Considering setting up a partition for PCLOS... under Windows [unless recommended otherwise, noob here]
    with Easus 6 Pro

    the current setup is this:
    http://imgur.com/RAMWC.png

my original plan was to leave C: intact [got macrium's nice system image made and don't feel like messing with it...]

So the logical [?] choice is to resize D: [used for storing files only; yes, got my backup on external hd]

Were I to do it on my own I'd cut out say 20GB, boot the PCLOS livecd, pointed to the partition waiting for linux... and let the installer do the rest...

And now is the part when you come in... how to do it? and be happy? ;)

Your answer's a bit quick. @ any rate, you make the call - take the initiative.

Agreed, one thing that tends to calm me down in E.R is seeing window not black screens...

Why do you say that ? PCLOS is as serious as any other distro.......and yes what works is what counts, something PCLOS does better than most.

PCLOS is quite good, fast rolling release with the latest stuff out before anyone else but its a one man effort so bear that in mind. So far it has done quite well for being a one man effort, sadly no x64 yet.

Just curious, but can BootIt NG be used for a linux partition?

Does anyone know if Shadow Protect can restore Linux image?

    korben,

Was PCLinuxOs the only 32 bit distro you tried? I didn't read all your posts but the ones I read you were using 64 bit distros, maybe your hardware doesn't like 64 bit applications.

His problem probably is kernel related, PCLOS uses latest, so does SUSE and thats why it works.

It did come to my attention to delve into the world of x32 again...fail

Ubu 10.04.1 for instance..but not only that.

Tried Suse 11.2 and didn't like it, nor did it work.

No hating here, mate! But the PC goes before Linux here - it goes without saying ;)

    Did you try opensuse 11.3?

    Did you try Linux Mint?

    Did you try Mandriva?

Not saying they are better than PCLOS, just curious :)
