This year’s Pixel situation is a bit of a weird one with the Pixel 6 technically now officially announced, but with a couple of months between now and the formal launch. Tonight, Google has confirmed that its current flagship, the Pixel 5, will be discontinued alongside the Pixel 4a 5G.

The Pixel 4a 5G being discontinued makes perfect sense following the Pixel 5a’s debut this week. However, the Pixel 5 kicking the bucket this early is certainly out of the ordinary for the smartphone market. Generally, older models aren’t discontinued until the next generation has been released, so Pixel 5 dropping off in August ahead of the Pixel 6’s presumed release in October is certainly well ahead of schedule.

Google says that both Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 will be sold out completely “in the coming weeks.” As it stands today, the Pixel 5 is marked out of stock from the US Google Store and the Pixel 4a 5G is as well.
Both phones also recently disappeared from Google Fi. The company confirmed the decision in a statement to The Verge:

With our current forecasts, we expect Google Store in the U.S. to sell out of Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5 in the coming weeks following the launch of Pixel 5a (5G). These products will continue to be available through some partners while supplies last.

The Google Pixel 5a’s overheating problem (via Android Police) seems like a pretty glaring issue to ship a phone with. In our testing, we found that video recording on the Pixel 5a was forcefully stopped by the OS after 9 minutes and 32 seconds when recording at 4K 60 FPS. TechOdyssey notes in a follow-up tweet that he has also faced overheating problems when recording at 4K 30 FPS and at 1080p 30 FPS.

With foldables becoming more popular, more brands will now jump onto the bandwagon, Google possibly being one of them.

Reports indicate that along with the Pixel 6 series that’s expected to launch soon, Google is also working on a foldable Pixel that will supposedly launch later this year. Renowned tipster @evleaks mentioned that the Pixel Fold, codenamed Passport, is expected to launch before the end of the year.
He says that Google has been working on this device for the past two years. David Naranjo, Senior Director at Display Supply Chain Consultants also mentioned the Pixel Fold in a list of devices that are rumored to use LTPO OLED panels with a variable refresh rate indicating that a folding Pixel might actually be in the works and might launch sooner than you’d expected.

These rumors are also supported by the fact that the upcoming Android 12.1 update brings several improvements and enhancements to the foldable phone experience.
There are some descriptions of a split-screen view that can be achieved by dragging and dropping apps from the taskbar, further indicating the usage of the feature on a large display like a foldable.

Google Pixel Fold may still be on the way this year

Blass confirmed that the handset’s code-name is Passport, but was not able to say what the retail name will be.
The Passport name was recently confirmed by an examination of the source code of the Android 12 Beta.

The devices use Samsung’s latest modem, and suggests the Passport uses the same Google Tensor processor as the Google Pixel 6.
The Passport is expected to have a 7.6 inch folding screen similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and like that device will also be coated with Ultra-Thin Glass.

Yesterday, a German retailer jumped the gun and revealed the price, specs, and release date of Google's upcoming Pixel 6. More renders of the Pixel 6 series phones have now surfaced online, courtesy of reliable leaker Evan Blass.

The renders shared by Blass give us our very first look at the new Pixel Stand that will debut along with the Pixel 6 series.
The new leak also gives us a clear look at the new Pixel Security app. It is essentially a new hub for all your security settings such as app security, find my device, screen lock, and more. Support for facial recognition is now all but confirmed as well.

Interestingly, one of the renders appears to confirm the camera specs of the Pixel 6 Pro. [...] a 50MP main sensor, joined by a 48MP telephoto lens and a 12MP ultra-wide lens. Some of the images also suggest the device will have an IP rating for dust and water resistance.

As confirmed by Google earlier this week, the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro will be unveiled on October 19. The event is set to kick off at 1 PM ET and could also see the launch of a few other new Google products.

A leaked marketing site has given us more details on the Pixel 6’s performance and camera this weekend, but the biggest detail comes in the form of software. Google seems to be officially committing to supporting the Pixel 6 with 5 years of updates.

A pair of marketing sites posted by Carphone Warehouse (via @evleaks) confirm that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will both be eligible for updates for at least 5 years following the debut of these two devices. In a footnote, Google says:

Android security updates for at least five years from when the device first became available on the Google Store in the US.
This change represents a pretty big upgrade from past Pixels, which were limited to only 3 years of support.

When Google released the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, it boasted about the devices’ fast-charging capabilities. Plugging a Pixel 6 series device into its $25 30W Fast Charger — which isn’t even included in the box — is supposed to take full advantage of the phone’s fast charging speed, juicing it up to 50 percent in just 30 minutes. We all can agree that this is an impressive spec, but unfortunately, it may not be totally realistic.

Android Authority put the Pixel 6’s fast charging speed to the test, and its findings suggest that Google’s spec sheet is misleading. After trying out the 30W charger with the Pixel 6, Android Authority found that the Pixel 6 doesn’t fully harness the power of the charger — instead, it only hits a maximum charging speed of just 22W.

Google doesn’t explicitly say that the Pixel 6 has a charging rate of 30W; it just says that both phones support “up to 50 percent charge in 30 minutes with Google 30W USB-C Charger with USB-PD 3.0 (PPS)” on its spec sheets.

But it still doesn’t make sense that Google would promote the Fast Charger if the Pixel 6 can’t take full advantage of it.

Google Has Reportedly Canceled Its Never-Announced Foldable Phone

For a brief moment in time, the rumor mill had us holding out hope that Google had a foldable Pixel on the horizon. But all that blind faith was for naught, as the never-announced Google Pixel Fold is reportedly not happening.

Ross Young, who has sources inside the supply chain via his work at Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), suggests that whatever Pixel foldable Google was planning to manufacture has been canceled. Young tweeted that multiple sources confirmed the company is not bringing the Pixel Fold to market in 2021 or the first half of 2022.

“Our sources indicated that Google believed the product wouldn’t be as competitive as it needed to be,” Young wrote. “They likely figured that competing against Samsung in the U.S. and Europe in a small niche market facing higher costs than their primary competitor, would stack the odds against this project.”

Now that the Pixel 6 has been out for a few weeks, Google has started to address some of the common complaints about the device.

First up, there's a new update out there addressing the fingerprint reader, which some people have had problems with. The November security update for the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro is build number "SD1A.210817.036," which this most recent fingerprint update increments by one, to end up with build "SD1A.210817.037." Google hasn't officially said what the build does, but Verizon posted a changelog for build 037, which says: "The current software update improves the performance of your device's fingerprint sensor."

The second issue: Charging! In a new community post, Google confirmed earlier testing from Android Authority's Robert Triggs that the Pixel 6 doesn't actually do 30 W charging and instead tops out at around 22 W. To the letter of the law, Google never technically stated a charging speed for the Pixel 6 on the website, which says the phone can hit "up to 50 percent charge in about 30 minutes—with Google 30 W USB-C Charger."

That's saying Google's recommended charger can do 30 W charging, not necessarily the phone, which technically has no wattage listed. It's not exactly lying, but it's also unnecessarily misleading.

Little is known about the specs, although the Pixel 6a will reportedly be smaller than its counterparts with a 6.2-inch OLED screen. You'd get dual cameras, too.

The 6a might be several months away, and there's a chance the design could change before then. A "lite" Pixel 6 would make sense, at least. Flaws aside, it's a return to form with an eye-catching design.

Thanks to recently leaked renders, we’ve already gotten our first taste of what the Pixel 6a has in store, at least visually. However, according to information uncovered by our APK Insight team within the Google Camera app, the Pixel 6a – internally codenamed Bluejay – will have a 12.2-megapixel Sony IMX363 primary sensor. This is the same camera sensor that is found in every Google phone from the Pixel 3 through the Pixel 5a.

While only one of the three cameras has changed, this will certainly make for a fairly significant downgrade from the Pixel 6 down to the Pixel 6a. On the plus side, we’ve been able to discover elsewhere that the Pixel 6a will have the same Google Tensor GS101 chip as the Pixel 6.
This is only fitting, given how much excitement Google built around the Tensor chip during the Pixel 6’s launch event.

According to the Korean news outlet The Elec, Google will start the mass production of the purported Pixel foldable phone in the third quarter of 2023. As per the report, there is no chance of the device making a debut in the first quarter, as Samsung will send the required foldable display shipment to Google in the July-August timeframe. If the report is accurate, we can expect the much-hyped Pixel foldable handset officially launch in September or October this year.

As for the specifications, rumor has it that the foldable Pixel phone will feature a 7.57-inch internal foldable and a 5.78-inch external display. It is said to be available in Chalk (white) and Obsidian (black) and may cost somewhere around $1,800.
