Documents outlining how Facebook profited off children are expected to be made public soon, according to Reveal News of the Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR), who requested the documents.

According to Reveal, the children did not know that their parent's credit card was stored on the platform when they clicked "buy," and in some cases, hundreds or even thousands of dollars were spent.
In one case, the plaintiff, who is a child, spent several hundreds of dollars in just a few weeks.

In one of the unsealed documents, two Facebook employees declined a refund request from a child, whom they referred to as a "whale." As Reveal News explains, the term was "coined by the casino industry to describe profligate spenders."

Facebook made a decision. Company policy was to tell game developers to let children spend money without their parents’ permission, according to an internal memo circulated within the company.

The memo stated, “Friendly Fraud – what it is, why it’s challenging, and why you shouldn’t try to block it.” “Friendly fraud” is the term Facebook used when children spent money on games without their parent’s permission.
The company was focused on revenue, not blocking friendly fraud. Its stated philosophy on chargebacks was “maximizing revenue,” according to the memo.
Fixing the problem would’ve hurt revenue
Facebook had uncovered some troubling data about the children playing its games. They were requesting refunds and demanding chargebacks at extraordinarily high rates.

Consumer groups are demanding Facebook kill its Messenger app for kids

Now, a consumer coalition is demanding that Facebook discontinue Messenger for kids, its social media platform for young children.

The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC), Common Sense Media, and 12 other advocacy groups say the details of Facebook’s actions, uncovered by the Center for Investigative Reporting and published by the news organization Reveal based on documents unsealed in a class-action lawsuit, show that the social media giant disregarded children’s interests.

“The documents appear to demonstrate that Facebook is willing to cause actual harm to children and families in its quest for profit,” the letter states.
“As such, Facebook is unfit to make any platform or product for children, especially one like Messenger Kids, which gives Facebook unfettered access to kids’ relationships, conversations, and private moments with friends and family.”

Two Democratic senators have asked Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to explain why the social network apparently "manipulated children into spending their parents' money without permission" while playing games on Facebook.

"A new report from the Center for Investigative Reporting shows that your company had a policy of willful blindness toward credit card charges by children—internally referred to as 'friendly fraud' [...] Notably, Facebook appears to have rejected a plan that would have effectively mitigated this risk and instead doubled down on maximizing revenue."

Markey and Blumenthal asked Zuckerberg a series of questions, and they requested a response by February 19.
"When did Facebook personnel become aware that children were likely unknowingly spending their parents' money while playing games on your platform?" they asked. "When did you, as CEO, become aware of this issue?"

Well, the funny thing is, Facebook is still doing just fine after all these scandals, they still make billions. I sold the stock too soon, it went up like crazy.

Who cares anymore when consequences if rendered are miniscule?

I'm booking a revolution that'll wipe out .... in 30+ years from now for one second after I die peacefully.

What really annoys me is when people externalize blame.

Is this typical corporate money-grabbing behavior? Yes.
Are parents 100% responsible for their children? Yes.

You give your child a device that has your credit card data stored - your problem. No different than giving them a wallet.

The device didn't set itself up - this was a set of active actions by parents and their offspring. They created accounts, provided data, card info, etc. ALLOWED their kids to use computers and Facebook, didn't educate them into how to use these tools properly. And then they blame the application for working as it was designed to work, i.e. making money of people with low IQ. Go figure.
