Looking at the ATI 1950, it's selling easily >300, 400, and 500 in some cases. Then some are about 100.

    Looking at the ATI 4850, it's about 150 to 250 ... ? Then the 4870 is anywhere from 400 to 700.

I'm using Google's shopping feature. Judging by price, the 1950 is slightly behind the 4870 ... right?

Slightly is an understatement........X1950 is more in the league of HD 3670 or something, within that price range the bare minimum you should be looking for is the HD 3870/4670 series and the 4870 is double the performance of the 3870/4670.......;)

The 4850 has the best price/performence ratio, its a whole lot of game for a soft price

Don't you hate those overlapping product ranges? The HD series should truly be "next generation".

Well, it is, in a way..........feature wise the HD 3000 and 4000 series are almost the same, it is mainly the performance that differs.....The performance scaling of each chip is done to maximize cost returns, and of course the previous generation owners don't feel outdated so quickly :D
