    Hello!

It occurs to me I should have asked what you think about this notebook prior to ordering it, but I didn't... tired of shopping... cool salesperson :) ...hasn't arrived yet, so while I wait what do you think?

I can get a refund for 30 days & the manufacturers warranty was great & no taxes or shipping fee!

    Asus K52Jr-X4

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...pNo=5592724&sku=A50-15616&srkey=asus k52jr-x4

    Thanks,

    Michele

Nice laptop and really good price. It's also from asus so its bound to be made from quality materials. The safe laptop brands are MSI, Asus, Lenovo.

    Nice for the price

2 recommendations - would of paid alittle more to upgrade it with 8 gigs of ram and 7200 rpm hard drive.

    Hi Michele

More ram and faster read/write 5400rpm vs 7200rpm come into play with more than just gaming such as multi-tasking, video editing and an example in my case, running virtual machines where you need to dedicate some of your ram to them.

Don't get me wrong - that's still a nice rig for that price.

4 gig would do me but would be nice to brag about having 8 gig. :D

Would prefer an SSD to a spinner but still a nice lappy as is.

    Oh! They're no longer available.

It was my understanding that unless you chose a configurable model, this is what you get. I've played around configuring and it drives the cost up. So I'm relieved to have found this. I will be able to tell when I get my hands on it if it feels too slow. I don't do any of your activities specifically, Tobacco. And Franklin I don't know what spinners or SSD are!

This reminds me of cars... what you'd love to drive and how close you can get to it, when what you need is to get from point A to point B safely and efficiently.

As long as it seems like a sound choice, it's not a luxury year here. :) You all seem to concur that it's a good notebook for the price $8xx. Good. I noticed that someone I have a lot of respect for has one very close to it in his signature... Reassuring.

Thank you for taking the time to post. I appreciate it.

    Michelle,

I think you'll be happy with Asus, I bought one myself about 9 months ago in the same price range, and have been totally happy with it so far. Asus puts together a quality machine. No issues whatsoever....

Asus makes great laptops (and motherboards and other computer hardware)

Asus is one of the largest manufacturers of laptops, they actually manufacture the barebones laptops for other mainstream brands...Original Design Manufacturer (ODM).

Asus makes many of the laptops for Sony, Apple, Alienware, and HP. ;)

When looking at laptops I look at the BIOS and see what functions are available.
Many manufacturers limit what you can tweak in the BIOS.
In my searches at the local stores HP seems to have the most features accessible to the user in the BIOS.
Features I looked at include 64bit enabling, security configuration and alerts, smart, temp and others.

    Pluses
    Blue ray
    HDMI

    Minuses
    Web cam
    Screen resolution

I won't buy a laptop that has a web cam built in. I avoid like the plague.
Not interested in being in someone elses movies.

What is the battery life for the laptop you ordered?
My laptops max at 2 hrs of life. Next one will be 8+ hours.

Built-in web cam is nice and I can avoid the hassle of one more accessory and one more wire. A piece of paper/ palstic tape covering the web cam wil cure any privacy issues, assuming they are real.

finding a modern laptop without a webcam will be quite difficult... almost all of them include one standard at this point.

Huh! First i've heard of this??

Anyways, my lowly (as DVD informed me) :D MSI ($599) has a touch sensor to turn the webcam on/off ;)

Yes, i think alot of people don't realize that the biggies - Sony, HP, etc don't actually build their own laptops.

I have read that Quanta and Compal are the two main vendors.

Just look at all the persons on this thread now!

The notebook was on backorder. I cancelled it early this morning... up all night, literally, reading specs & configurations. I'm going to get a better deal on a better configuration. I've spoken with Asus too! There are 2 (1 has dropped in price just since yesterday...Asus G51JX-X2 --it's the link in post #4 of this thread) I like better at Tiger Direct right now, but since the 4th of July sale prices begin the 1st and nothing would arrive prior to then... I think I'm going to wait! Or I may order and return... the restocking fee seems like it's solely at their discretion to use the way it's written.

A warning to anyone buying from Best Buy, they not only do not allow Asus to offer its wonderful 2 year warranty, but they do the service! Unacceptable.

Sure wish their was Asus Direct. So you have inspired me to shoot for higher specs...

    Thanks for being so knowledgeable.

    Michele

    @tobacco
Is it possible that an in memory modification can make your touch sensor switch rendered useless taking streaming of the web cam content out of your control?

    @agile
What about the microphone, how will the tape help?

    @firzen771
Only about 30% of the laptops I viewed at the local Best Buy included a web cam.
Sam's Club was about 50% or better, while Wal mart was 20%.
Haven't visited Circuit City in awhile though.

You should always take more time when purchasing a laptop because everything is built in, once you make a purchase you have to live with it.

Changes practically yearly, based on models, when vendors put out to bid, etc. As you can easily learn from a mere few minutes going a Google search, there are easily over half a dozen ODMs that do the work for most popular brands. Asus has been getting more and more contracts for more brands in recent years.

Well, anything's possible i guess. I have a light (beside the webcam) that comes on when the webcam is activated. Could this be bypassed as well o_O ?
