    Have 2 hard drives on my PC, thankfully, or you wouldn't be reading this. Drive C is XP, Drive D is Win 2K. Normally boot into XP. Have been using Grisoft Free Edition Virus Scanner for a while successfully. Tonight, decided to scan C for viruses. Scans for approx 5-10 minutes, then freezes. Can’t get it to do anything. Totally locked up. Note that the Grisoft virus scanner had identified Java/byte/verify just prior to locking up. Because of the lock up, had to power down with the reset button. Go to restart, and XP won’t get any farther than the XP splash screen. Tried to boot into last known good config, nothing. Tried to boot to safe mode, nothing. Had to reboot into Win2K. Once there, cannot get into C drive at all. Says, “C is not accessible. Disk structure is corrupted or unreadable”. Any ideas on what happened, and what to do? Recovery console? Of course there’s stuff I don’t want to loose on C. So I hope I don’t have to format and reload XP on C! Thanks.

    Hi, try clearing the Java cache, instructions HERE , alot of Java infections can be cleaned this way, although if you are having boot problems there will be additional malware on the drive.

    If you cannot boot into Win XP at all you have two options;

    1. Slave the infected drive and scan with AV and AS programs, attempt manual removal of the infection.

    2. Attempt to repair the Win XP installation.

    If you need futher hepl please post back.
