Jack Dorsey will soon be stepping down from his role as the CEO of Twitter, according to a new report from CNBC. Shares of Twitter stock jumped more than 10% on the report, but more details on who’s in line to succeed Dorsey are unclear.

Update: Twitter has confirmed the news. CTO Parag Agrawal will take over as CEO, Dorsey will remain on the board through his term and will then depart.

This isn’t the first time Dorsey has exited his role as CEO of Twitter. Dorsey first served as the company’s CEO until 2008 when he transitioned to chairman of the board. Then, in 2015 he took over as interim CEO when Dick Costolo resigned. A few months later, Dorsey was named permanent CEO.

Dorsey is also the CEO of Square, a financial services and digital payments company. Dorsey cofounded Square in 2009 and has split his time between both companies since then.

More details on Dorsey’s departure from Twitter are unclear. Neither Twitter nor Dorsey have commented on or confirmed CNBC’s report and it’s unclear who will succeed Dorsey as CEO.

It’s unclear who’s set to succeed Dorsey. But if he steps down, the next CEO will have to meet Twitter’s aggressive internal goals. The company said earlier this year it aims to have 315 million monetizable daily active users by the end of 2023 and to at least double its annual revenue in that year.

In stepping down as Twitter CEO on Monday, Jack Dorsey is handing over the reins to a 37-year-old computer scientist with a PhD from Stanford who’s had a central role in developing the company’s artificial intelligence technology, all while staying largely out of public view.

Parag Agrawal, who joined Twitter a decade ago and worked his way up to technology chief in 2017, will take over as CEO immediately, following Dorsey’s surprise resignation. Dorsey described his trust in Agrawal as “bone deep.”

“The board ran a rigorous process considering all options and unanimously appointed Parag,” Dorsey wrote, in an email to Twitter employees on Monday that he also shared via tweet. “He’s been my choice for some time given how deeply he understands the company and its needs.”

Timothy Chklovski, a former Twitter software engineer, praised Agrawal’s leadership style, technical prowess and commitment to Twitter.

“Parag is phenomenal, understands the problems, stays up late to get it done, mentors others — he’s the whole package,” Chklovski, who worked with Agrawal from 2012 to 2014, told CNBC. “And he lives and breathes Twitter.”

Acutely earnest and idealistic, he passionately believes that tech can bring about global peace and prosperity.
He's a kind of hippie libertarian, a philosophy that seems somewhat baffling at times. He also happens to be a genuine tech visionary.

Dorsey has been seen by some as the reason for Twitter's stunted growth. A Twitter purist, who had helped create the platform, but didn't want monetization at the expense of user experience.
Obsession with cryptocurrencies
Dorsey had become obsessed with cryptocurrencies, and in particular Bitcoin.
He'd recently set up a dedicated crypto team - looking at ways in which the company embraces digital assets and decentralized apps.

The team was to sit under Agrawal - perhaps a sign that digital currencies will play a key role in the new chief executive's vision for the company's growth.

Twitter’s new CEO, Parag Agrawal, announced a major reorganization of the company Friday, putting his stamp on the organization following the sudden departure of co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey earlier this week, according to a companywide email obtained by The Washington Post.

Two executives, head of engineering Michael Montano and Dantley Davis, will step down as part of the reshuffling. They will leave the company by year’s end, Agrawal said in the email to employees.
The moves are the first major sign that Twitter’s new leader intends to shake up a culture that has been considered slow to innovate and mired in internal conflict.
