Nice, a new Apple virus that installs the Bonjour Service which silently transmits all usage data to Apple! Enjoy!

This is the main reason I don't buy any apple products such a iPod, iPhone, or iPad; because if you want to transfer data to it or enjoy using it properly, you must install iTunes which effectively installs mDNSResponder.exe AKA Bonjour Service. If you disable that, iTunes won't function properly at times until you manually re-enable the service.

The way I discovered this was 3 or 4 years back, everytime I formatted my PC, after installing all my Software, my system would become sluggish and behave in a strange way. I looked at the running processes and saw mDNSResponder.exe

After some research, I found about all the harmful things that it does and worst of all it is not classified as a Virus by any AV. Well it is not really a Virus, but a huge security/privacy risk which in turn slows down your PC's performance as well.

PS: Thank God we agree on something for once :)

The FUD is strong in this thread. In my experience, mDNSResponder.exe is far from a resource hog. As for submitting "all usage data to Apple" - seriously?

Here's to hoping that iTunes 11 will include significant performance enhancements for Windows. Its performance is painfully slow for certain operations, such as transferring apps to and from an Apple device.

Thanks for the heads up...I can't begin to tell you the sheer joy I'm feeling, just knowing that I will be spending at least an hour updating both of my kids pc's. At least when you see Quick Time being installed, you know you're in the home stretch...The best part is listening to my daughter whine throughout the entire process, asking me why it's so slow, she needs that program installed right away, so she can buy the new Justin Bieber tune....

iTunes = junk. iPhone = pretty good. You don't need iTunes to enjoy iPhone. You can transfer your data via drop box.

Dropbox means network latency and limitations. Windows should be able to natively write in iOS.

Installed on my kids pc's last night. The upgrade and installation time seems to have decreased a bit, which is certainly a plus. All went well.

    My daughter agrees completely! :D

I like how they simplified the home page and changed it.

I would tend to agree as there is less wading around trying to get places you didn't know existed. Thanks for your feedback.

It used to be that there was a way to install just the media player. The process included extracting just the main media installer from the original installer from Apple. Not sure if it's still applicable today.

If you were to look up "bloat" in the dictionary, it would probably be defined as "Apple software". I don't think I've ever installed anything from Apple that hasn't installed some additional, pointless software. From "MobileMe" with Safari to "Bonjour" with iTunes. It's just Apple leveraging the popularity of 1 piece of software to install another.

Whilst I disagree with others talking about performance loss, it doesn't change the fact that this is the definition of bloat.

    iTunes simply sucks.
I have lots of friends had used iPods in the past but no longer uses them, one of their must have software is Apple iTunes even though they no longer use any Apple hardware . . . go wonder. :cautious: :thumbd:
