Is VOIP safe?

    I am wondering whether I am taking undue risks when using VOIP ?
    I am not particularly concerned about someone eavesdropping or so but if the set up could create weakness with regards to firewall or network sharing, circumventing normal safety with regards to AV, AT or other nasties?
