Is VirtualBox a good app for testing software in?

    Yes :) It will create a full computing environment (like having another PC)

    Testing software is the exact purpose of virtual machines. :)

    Being a freeware, VirtualBox is an excellent VMware alternative. Both support dual processors, and (if I am not mistaken) VB has a feature similar to VMware's "snapshots". VirtualBox can also play VMware images (machines).

    I am not using VB at the moment, for the one sole reason - I have uninstalled VB twice, and every time it leaves behind a "hidden device" driver installed. I had to uninstall that manually both times. Haven't tried the latest version of VB, so that could be polished by now.
