From my understanding, never has been. I've purchased it year after year for almost the past 10 years.

The Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool is free, updated a number of times a day, but must be downloaded again to receive new definitions. Can do a full scan of your system (detect/remove).

    No real time protection.

The AVP tool however, is great to use as a backup scan, say when using a free AV (avast, avira, pc tools).

But if you buy the Kaspersky AV, you're getting (from the website):

Is it worth the cash? Yes. Less if you buy 3 licenses.

KIS has everything you need, but it slowed down my system a bit due to it checking every new file and processing it through heuristics and hips.

Not free as we know it but if you do online banking it maybe.

Here in the UK my Bank gives out free licenses for KIS ( for 3 computers ) to their online customers.

You may buy it through a friend/relative that has a credit/debit card. It's definitely worth the money.

I think it was freeware when aol had it a while back. That was a really good AV. Then AOL cut them or KAV quit. That was a very sad day for the freebie security people.

USA still the best. But barely.
Thats a sweet deal for those in the UK whose banks give them KIS9 free. Wish the US banks would.
