I just did a fresh install of Vista, had to do it quickly as my Beta license expired. While I was running the beta I wasn't worrying about malware, as the system had bugs of its own to begin with. I have gone ahead and downloaded Avast, as it's better to have something than nothing, but it'd be nice to have a short response on what's the best free one for now, so I can have something good running while I start researching AV programs the way I did when I was on XP. One thing I've already noticed so far is NOD32 might be slipping, it was my go-to program before, but it looks like I'm going to have to research from scratch.

So, is Avast a good start, or is there another one that's really better for free (hey, AVG might have pulled ahead while I wasn't looking)?

    Thanks

    this forum is biased!
avast is the best free one.

its got the same security as the paid version, lacks of schedule scans or something and a script blocker (you get that if you use firefox or opera i believe anyway) , THATS IT!

    have a look: http://www.avast.com/eng/av4_version_comp.html

Depends on what you mean by the "best".

    Avast is a good choice.

    Hello.:)

Yeah. Well, as far as detection is the criteria for "the best", Avira is also free. ;)

When considering lower detection or that freakin update popup i'd go with lower detection anytime. avast! or AOL AVS are the main players now, forget about the rest...

    Hi.

LOL. I know, my dad is using free Avira, and I'm always annoyed when I see that update on his screen. But he likes it. :D It's still a very good AV.

    Cheers. ;)

My favorite free AV is avast! Home, and I don't see other that can offer more useful features and support, than avast! Home...

Avira is ranked above Avast by AV-Comp.

As my original post stated, I need something for now until I've been able to research.

Avast is very stable here on my XP home. The web (http) scanner is a nice feature also. Oh and don't forget about the boot time scanner and screen saver scanning features. :)

Avast and AntiVir are both genuinely good offering, free or paid.

Using Avast here now on a clean XP install and running smoothly. Have used Avast off and on for years and have always liked it...

AVS from Kaspersky through AOL is the one I use more on freebies lately. Avira is also good. If I use Avast...I get too many complaints of the system running slow as molasses. And AVG just doesn't have the detection rates anymore...eclipsed by other free ones.

    AntiVir:has the best detection rate.

Avast:updates are much easier for me.
Has some nice real-time components and e-mail scanner.

Either program is a good choice IMO.

AntiVir Free doesn't detect Adware/Spyware, and has a lot of false-positives...

Sorry guys but I see this thread as a variation of the "which is best" or "X versus Y" type of thread.

Therefore, in line with this recent Admin statement, I'm closing this thread.

    Regards
