Is AI hype muddling the meaning of Machine Learning?

These are just some of the claims reported in the media over the past year about the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in cybersecurity practices:

“AI systems in cybersecurity will free up an enormous amount of time for tech employees.”

“AI systems can help by categorizing attacks based on threat level.”

“AI technology allows us to detect unknown and unseen threats”

What they should really say is that ‘Machine Learning’ (ML) can do this – not AI.

Put simply, AI happens when machines conduct tasks without pre-programming or training – and this does not yet exist. ML, in comparison, relies on training computers, using algorithms, to find patterns in vast amounts of data and identify potentially malicious data based on rules and information it already has. ML is nothing new; it has been present in cybersecurity since the ‘90s.

AI was supposed to fix security – what happened?

Over the past several years there was no such thing as a security vendor that didn’t have machine learning (ML) – usually mischaracterized it as artificial intelligence (AI) because bandwagons are so attractive, no matter how misleading – and they mostly claimed it was going to fix security for good. But it didn’t.

At Black Hat 2018 the aisles were bustling and activity kept ramping up, not subsiding. Last year there were no shortage of security breaches and they seem to be continuing unabated, so what happened with the promise of AI?

Ai/ML is marketing gimmick to get to new not-so-knowledgeable users.
Only the biggest vendors have the resources and datas to efficiently deploy ML and they stay quiet about it because they use it since ages.
