    Introducing a new top-level directory, /run - Debian.org

Was this included in Ubuntu 11.10?
    Is this a security enhancement?

After upgrade, are the old directories still there wasting space?

They are still there as links pointing to /run. Wasting space? With 4 Bytes each - well, not really ;)
