    Greetings

My father in law told me he had computer problems and described symptoms similar to what I experienced recently which I got help for here. So I am back to see if I can help him.

I have run Spybot S&D on his system and removed a lot of cookies and a few registry changes. After scanning with HijackThis it seemed ok as far as I could tell (not that I really know which is why I am here). I checked his startup items on this great startups site I know of (http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm) and found that one item "SysUpd" was listed as being "InternetAntispy foistware". There was a link to a page (http://tired-of-spam.home.comcast.net/internet.html) describing the problems he is having.

So I'm pretty sure I have narrowed it down but I wanted to post his log here before I start clicking "fix checked" buttons all willy-nilly like. Any direction anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated by me and him.

    Hello splodge,

    You are correct about sysupd.

Check the following items and then close all windows except Hijackthis and click "fix checked"

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SysUpd] C:\WINDOWS\SYSUPD.EXE

    O16 - DPF: {DCF0768D-BA7A-101A-B57A-0000C0C3ED5F} -

Then restart the computer and find:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSUPD.EXE <--- delete only the file

You may need to enable hidden files if you can't find it: http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html#2

Then scan with hijackthis and post a new log to make sure everything is fixed.

You need to visit Windows Update and install all critical updates for Intenet Explorer, some spyware programs use vulnerbilities in older versions to install themselves....

You may want to consider SpywareBlaster as well to prevent future problems:

SpywareBlaster will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies. http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

    Here's the new scan results.

I'm going to Windows Update now to get security patches for IE.

I will inform him about the option of spyware blaster as well.

    Thanks
