    Hello!

I have two PCs (one belonging to me, the other to my girlfriend). They both run Windows XP SP2. Hers uses ZoneAlarm Free as a firewall, mine uses Look n Stop.

Her PC used to have an ADSL modem connected and I would access the internet using ICS, which worked great.

However, recently her computer has been behaving a little erratically (I think the fan may be a little dodgy), so we decided to move the ADSL modem to my PC.

I set up the modem on my PC, changed my IP address to 192.168.0.1, removed my default gateway, enabled ICS and then imported a couple of LnS rules I found on this forum.

I then disabled ICS on her PC, changed the IP to 192.168.0.6 and added my PC as her default gateway.

The internet works fine for me.

However, as soon as she tries to access it, my computer restarts without warning. Sometimes she can download a page of Google News, or pick up her email, but it's pretty much immediate, and it happens every time.

I realise that this is not likely to be a LnS problem (as I temporarily quit it, accessed the internet from her PC, and mine restarted!!!) but I am at a bit of a loss for what to do.

Has anyone come across this sort of thing before?

    Please help!!

    Thanks,

    John

    Hi John,

Yes, similar cases have been reported yet, in very rare circumstances.

Unfortunately, the root cause of this issue is not known so far :(

Could you check if the crash created a Minidump file as BSOD does ? (Minidump are in c:\windows\minidump folder).

If you are not using the 2.05p2 yet (this is displayed in the welcome page), you can try to update to this version.
Also you can check if there is some driver updates for your network cards. Very often crash like this were solved this way.

Frederic, thanks very much for replying to me!

The minidump directory only contains one file, dated October 2004. I am already using LnS 2.05p2.

The network drivers was a great idea, and one that hadn't occurred to me. Unfortunately now I've updated them I'm still experiencing the same problem.

I've submitted a support request to Dell about it, but I'm not entirely convinced they're going to be much help! (We'll see...)

Can you think of anything else I could try?

It's frustrating not to get any errors at all!

Again, thanks very much for such a quick reply and for the useful suggestions - much appreciated.

    John

    Hi,

Actually I'm not sure if the problem is coming from the internet filtering or from the application filtering.
Could you try to deacticate the application filtering and then verify if the problem is still there ?
To deactivate it, simply rename lnsfw1.sys into lnsfw1.old and reboot. You will have an error when Look 'n' Stop will start but the Internet Filtering will be still there and activated.

    Thanks,

    Frederic

    Hi Frederic,

    Thanks, again, for the reply.

I got a reply from Dell telling me that they weren't going to help me. Not all that impressed!!

I have tried quitting LnS and ICS still makes my computer restart. I don't think the problem is LnS related, but I'm not sure where else to post the problem!
