Why it matters: Intel shed light on some more details about its upcoming high-end gaming graphics cards as part of its Architecture Day 2021 presentation, including its AI-powered super sampling solution which it calls Xe Super Sampling (XeSS). XeSS will have two modes, a presumably more effective solution for Intel's own hardware and another one that will run on AMD and Nvidia cards as well as integrated graphics.

The way Intel's presentation describes XeSS makes it sound much more similar to Nvidia's Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) than AMD's recently unveiled FidelityFx Super Resolution (FSR). Like DLSS, XeSS is a temporal solution that will use information from previous frames in order to upscale a game to higher resolutions while saving on performance.

That demo used a hardware-accelerated super sampling mode Intel calls XMX which will work exclusively on its recently unveiled Arc graphics cards, using their Xe Matrix Extension (XMX) cores. The other version of XeSS should run on any hardware with DP4a instruction, which includes Nvidia GPUs, AMD GPUs, and integrated graphics chips.

Intel confirmed developers will be able to get their hands on the SDK for the XMX version of XeSS this month, with the DP4a version coming later this year. Intel plans to make the tools and SDK open-source later on as XeSS matures.

Why it matters: Intel in a recent interview revealed some more information about its upcoming AI-powered image reconstruction technology, what hardware it will support, and how it compares to efforts from competitors AMD and Nvidia. This comes after Intel's initial presentation of XeSS last week. In the interview, the chipmaker most closely compared XeSS to Nvidia's DLSS but outlined some key differences, particularly in how they implement it in individual games.

When games first started implementing Nvidia’s DLSS in 2018, its AI had to be trained for each individual game. When Nvidia later rolled out DLSS 2.0, it was based on a more general neural network used across games. In an interview with Wccftech, Intel principal engineer Karthik Vaidyanathan confirms the company is already at a similar stage with XeSS, referencing the real-time demo from last week’s presentation.

In the interview, Intel further confirms this should work on anything that supports Shader Model 6.4, though it recommends using Shader Model 6.6.
Intel also confirmed that, like DLSS and AMD's FSR, XeSS will have different quality modes and will work at different resolutions.

According to Vaidyanathan, Intel trains the XeSS AI on what he estimates is equivalent to 32K resolution, compared to the 16K for DLSS, though he bases that number on samples per pixel. "We train with reference images that have 64 samples per pixel," he said. "I wouldn't call it 32k because what we are doing is effectively all those samples are contributing to the same pixel....But yeah, effectively 32k pixels is what we use to train."

In brief: Intel’s Arc Alchemist GPUs aren’t here yet, but that didn’t stop the company from dropping some teasers around that as well as its XeSS supersampling technology during the Innovation 2021 event. XeSS looks like a promising alternative to AMD's FSR and Nvidia's DLSS, and developers can already start adding support for it into their games.

However, the software also has to be on point, and Intel has chosen to develop its XeSS supersampling technique as an open technology just like AMD’s FSR. This should, at least in theory, give it a higher chance of quick adoption by game developers.
During the Innovation 2021 event, Intel announced it has partnered with game studios IO Interactive and Exor Studios to bring XeSS support to Hitman 3 and The Riftbreaker.

The announcement was accompanied by brief video demos, but unfortunately they’re only available in 1080p. The company says it will update the YouTube upload to 4K quality so we can get a better idea of the quality provided by XeSS upscaling, but the big promise here is that you’ll be able to get close to 4K native image quality with the performance cost of 1080p native rendering.

Intel also touched on support for features like ray tracing and Xe Ground-Truth Ambient Occlusion (XeGTAO).
The company has already shared the SDK for these technologies as well as XeSS with select developers as part of the early-access DevMesh program. This means that both large studios as well as indie game developers can already start integrating XeSS support into their titles, which is a great way for Intel to spur adoption ahead of the official launch of Arc Alchemist GPUs.

Highly anticipated: GPU shortages have been a roadblock for gamers, builders, and other users looking for an upgrade since late 2020. Earlier this year, Intel announced that their in-house graphics hardware lineup, Arc, would be released by the first quarter of 2022 to compete directly with Nvidia and AMD. Based on recent information and videos from Intel, it looks like Team Blue is serious about capturing a piece of the GPU market.

Two of the leading technologies in this generation's GPU wars have been Nvidia's Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) and AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR).
Never one to be outdone by the competition, Intel has thrown their hat in the ring with their own super sampling feature, known as Intel Xe Super Sampling (XeSS).

Intel recently released a video of XeSS in action on an Intel Arc GPU. Unlike previous demonstrations, this latest video from Team Blue provides one of the first real looks at 1080p content upscaled and recorded in 4k. The video leaves little to be debated, with the upscaling solution delivering noticeably higher quality 4k images.

It is currently unknown what level of compatibility Intel's solution will provide with older generation hardware.

Intel XeSS 1.0.1 Released With Bug Fixes

Last month Intel published the XeSS 1.0 SDK for their Xe Super Sampling technology showcased with Arc Graphics discrete graphics cards. Sadly their initial SDK drop included Windows binaries and wasn't fully open-source. On Friday XeSS 1.0.1 was published with some bug fixes but still not being fully open-source.

Intel has promoted XeSS as being "open-source" but so far Xe Super Sampling hasn't been entirely open-source. There are some header files and such for interfacing with the XeSS Windows binaries, but no open-source implementation has been publicly seen so far of the XeSS implementation.
With yesterday's XeSS 1.0.1 SDK release there is noted "bug fixes" over September's 1.0 release. Additionally, a Chinese developer guide for the XeSS SDK has also been added.
Hopefully Intel will follow through and actually make XeSS fully open-source.
