Intel creates chip to control quantum computers

Quantum computers aim to carry out tasks in just a few minutes that would take today’s best conventional computers thousands of years. But in nearly every photograph of the devices, there’s a tangle of wires in the background connected to equipment that controls the quantum computer.

Intel Corp (INTC.O) on Monday announced a chip that it hopes will change that. The Santa Clara, California-based chipmaker announced a chip called “Horse Ridge” that is designed to take all the work being done by the wires and shrink it down to a chip and electronics about the size of a tea cup saucer.
The company hopes the chip will make its quantum computers more practical to produce in the future.

“Intel recognized that quantum controls were an essential piece of the puzzle we needed to solve in order to develop a large-scale commercial quantum system,” Jim Clarke, Intel’s director of quantum hardware, said in a statement.

Intel has unveiled a new cryogenic quantum chip that it claims marks a “milestone in the development of a commercially viable quantum computer”.
The chipmaker outlined the technical features of the “Horse Ridge” chip in a research paper released at the 2020 International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) in San Francisco.

Intel said the chip could be used to build a quantum computing system powerful enough to satisfy the three conditions of quantum practicality: scalability, flexibility and fidelity.

“Today, quantum researchers work with just a small number of qubits, using smaller, custom-designed systems surrounded by complex control and interconnect mechanisms,” said Jim Clarke, director of quantum hardware, Intel Labs.
“Intel’s Horse Ridge greatly minimizes this complexity. By systematically working to scale to thousands of qubits required for quantum practicality, we’re continuing to make steady progress toward making commercially viable quantum computing a reality in our future,” he added.

Last year, Intel debuted its first-generation Horse Ridge cryogenic control chip to make quantum computing more commercially viable. The SoC targeted control electronics and interconnections within quantum computers to reduce the complexity of controlling and managing quantum circuits.

Today, at Intel Labs Day 2020, the tech giant unveiled the next iteration of its Horse Ridge SoC. Dubbed Horse Ridge II, the new SoC is implemented using 22nm low-power FinFET technology (22FFL) and its functionality has been verified at temperatures as low as 4 kelvins, just like last-gen.

However, Horse Ridge II builds on its predecessor and adds two vital features: the ability to manipulate and read qubit states, and the ability to control the potential of several gates required to entangle multiple qubits.
The new SoC also has a programmable microcontroller that performs additional filtering on pulses to reduce crosstalk between qubits. Intel plans to detail the full technical specifications of Horse Ridge II during the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) in February next year.
