Intel has hired away a former AMD silicon design executive to lead the chipmaker's discrete GPU efforts ahead of the new product line's expected 2020 debut.

In a message to CRN, Masooma Bhaiwala said her full title at Intel is vice president, discrete GPU SoCs, a role that puts her in charge of discrete GPUs for client, data center and high-performance computing segments. She started in December, according to her LinkedIn profile.

"After 15+ amazing years at AMD, I have decided to take on a different opportunity... It was a truly fun ride, with an incredible team, during which we built some truly cool chips," she wrote in a recent post.
The chipmaker has previously said it plans to release its first discrete GPU in 2020, though it most recently has revealed details for a 7nm HPC and deep learning GPU, code-named Ponte Vecchio.
All of Intel's discrete GPU products will be based on the chipmaker's Xe architecture, which is meant to give developers a common framework.

Intel has dominated the CPU game for decades, and at CES 2020, the company officially announced its first discrete GPU, the codenamed “DG1”, marking a big step forward for Intel’s computing ambitions.

There were almost no details provided on the DG1, but Intel did showcase a live demo of Destiny 2 running on the GPU. Rumors from Tom’s Hardware indicate that the DG1 is based on the Xe architecture, the same graphics architecture that will power Intel’s integrated graphics on the upcoming 10nm Tiger Lake chips that it also previewed at its CES keynote.
Intel says that the integrated Xe graphics on Tiger Lake will deliver doubled graphics performance compared to its previous-generation chips, which means that the DG1 GPU will likely offer an even greater boost to Intel’s graphics performance.

Intel hasn’t said when to expect to see devices powered by the DG1 arrive; the company did say that its first Tiger Lake chips with integrated Xe graphics are expected to ship later this year, with chips set to arrive at OEMs this summer.

Based on a quickly deleted post from its official twitter account, we'll find out more details on August 13. "You've waited. You've wondered. We'll deliver. In 20 days, expect more details on Xe graphics," read the message.

We've heard a fair bit about Intel's Xe GPU platform, which will come in the form of integrated graphics and dedicated graphics cards. Exactly which one the tweet was referring to is unclear, though its wording suggests it'll be some sort of presentation, rather than an actual launch date. It's also unknown why Intel deleted the tweet.
Back in November, Intel said Xe would come in three flavors: high-performance, low-power, and high-performance compute.

In addition to servers and professionals, Intel is also aiming Xe Graphics at gamers, and have announced the cards' hardware-level ray tracing acceleration.
We also know that the upcoming Tiger Lake mobile processors will be the first to show off the platform via Gen12 Xe Graphics, and they could launch at a virtual event on September 12.

I hope this stuff will end up in "all in one" desktops, because they always seems to have weak GPU's, that's what kept me from buying them.

Bottom line: At Intel’s recent earnings report, CEO Bob Swan confirmed that the development of Xe GPUs is progressing well. Their low-power, budget option, codenamed DG1, is already shipping and could be available for the holiday season. Intel's high-performance gaming graphics chip is still in the early phases of testing but is looking good thus far.

After a 20 year hiatus, Intel is returning to the discrete graphics card market. They've divided their GPUs, collectively marketed as Xe, into four categories: low-power (LP), high-performance gaming (HPG), high-performance (HP), and high-performance compute (HPC).

Swan commented that the DG1 will "be in systems from multiple OEMs later in Q4," which suggests that the card might only be available in pre-built desktops.
Swan also officially commented on the DG2 for the first time, describing it as an HPG product that "will take our discrete graphics capability up the stack into the enthusiast segment."
