There isn't a day when I don't come across comments from bots on Instagram. They're all over the place. But there's nothing they love more than to spam high-profile pages with millions of followers. Whether it's LeBron James, Kim Kardashian, ESPN or Ariana Grande [...]

On April 21st, two days after we first reported on how these bots were invading Instagram, celebrity and social media influencer Chrissy Teigen tweeted about the issue to her more than 11 million followers. "Honestly Instagram needs to handle this [***]," she said.
What makes these sketchy comments thrive is that they tend to garner hundreds or thousands of likes instantly, sending them to the top of the comments section on posts from celebrities and other popular accounts.

According to a report by Tenable, a cybersecurity research firm, many of these "porn bots" are coming up with new techniques to avoid being detected by Instagram's security systems. [...] which tricks Instagram's systems into thinking they're being written by a real person, not a bot.

Satnam Narang, the author of Tenable's report, says these porn bots are now so sophisticated that not only can they like your pictures or comment on them, but they can even slide into your direct messages.

"To its credit, Instagram has worked to try to thwart the efforts of the operators of these porn bot accounts," he said. "But, as you can imagine, it is a cat-and-mouse game."

Porn bots are now storming Twitter's trending topics

Instagram isn't the only social media app being invaded by porn bots. Now they're on Twitter, too. For the past few days, as I was scrolling through Twitter's trending section, I noticed a number of accounts showing similar behavior as the bots that have taken over Instagram comments.
And they're even more brazen in their attempts to lure in gullible readers [...]

What's more interesting is that the accounts we discovered showed up under the "Top" tab of Twitter's trending section, not "Latest," meaning they were one of the first things people saw if they viewed the river of tweets on any hot topic.
[...] once you click on the URL she tweeted, you get redirected to sites like [...] Some of these are the same sites you'll come across when you fall for a scheme from the bots leaving comments on Instagram, except on Twitter they're using trending topics to run their operation.

That said, the company is going to have to remain vigilant if it wants to keep these NSFW scammers under control.

Instagram asks suspected bots to verify themselves with video selfies

Instagram is asking some users to provide a video selfie showing multiple angles of their face to verify that they’re a real person, according to screenshots posted to Twitter by social media consultant Matt Navarra. The social network has long struggled with bot accounts, which can leave spam messages, harass people, or be used to artificially inflate like or follower counts. A followup tweet from Meta-owned Instagram says it’s asking suspicious accounts to verify they’re human, not bots.

According to XDA Developers, the company started testing the feature last year but ran into technical issues. Multiple users have recently reported being asked to take a video selfie to verify their existing accounts.

Another writer on Twitter, Bettina Makalintal, posted a screenshot of the help screen for the step where you actually take the video selfie — it reiterates that it’s looking at “all angles of your face” to prove that you’re a real person and shows that the verification screen is showing up for multiple people.

Nevertheless, the message from Instagram is that the video selfie feature won’t use face recognition at all and that the video will be deleted after 30 days.

Meta’s promise to not store or post the data may not reassure some users who are already distrustful of Meta / Facebook.
