Never really gave it a thought until I stumbled across a post in the Ubuntu
    forums.
Someone mentioned 'qink' which I see is listed in the repos. Are there perhaps
other alternatives, and if so, what's recommended by you ?
(I have an old HP 5150 inkjet printer with 2 cartridges, black and colour).

BTW. As a side note, I was really impressed that Jaunty 64 bit had no problem
at all with this printer - nor has Hardy 32 bit on my other HDD. With Windows
I would have had to search for a 64 bit driver .... :)

Check the package manager for HPLIP. This is HP's Linux utility for handling ink level and many other functions for HP printesr, scanners and fax.

OK, Thanks. I already had HPLIP, so installed the gui for it. Problem solved.
I now have HPLIP Toolbox in Menu>Preferences and can see the ink levels. :D
