Scammers are selling 3.2 million payment records stolen from Indian cardholders

Cybercriminals have reaped a healthy profit by buying and selling on the dark web financial information that belongs to cardholders in India, according to new research.
Underground forums contained 3.2 million records of stolen Indian card data last year, a 219 percent uptick from 2017, Gemini Advisory, a dark-web intelligence company, said Thursday.

“Criminals continuously search for payment cards from specific banks that provide the highest return on investment, and largely spend money only when confident that they stand to make a profit,” researchers said in a report.
“Such a closed ecosystem presents plenty of opportunities for Indian cybercriminals seeking to defraud local banking customers,” Alforov told CyberScoop in an email.

“The rising cost of Indian compromised payment cards and the demand for such cards suggests that criminals have identified multiple reliable ways of monetizing such data,” Alforov said.

India: Cyber centre issues ‘threat alert’
Government departments cautioned against using private emails

The A.P. Cyber Security Operations Centre issued a threat advisory to all departments a couple of days ago against using private e-mails in view of their vulnerability to attacks in phishing and other forms, and blocked the said e-mails as a precautionary measure.

This resulted in private e-mails not working at the Secretariat departments and other offices.
All departments have been alerted about it and advised to stick to official domain-based (‘ap.gov.in’) e-mails accounts to avoid potential attacks, he stated, dismissing speculation that it could be an act of mischief.

People were excessively habituated to private e-mails which faced threat from malicious software like Ransomware, in spite of the availability of secure e-mail addresses, he observed.
