Drive letters staying the same has nothing to do with the imaging program, it's the machine. On one of my machines they do, on the other they don't, regardless of the imaging program. You just need to label the drives and go by the labels. You should be able to teach that to the average Mother in Law.

And how the five year old create a restore BartPe or Dos floppy, let alone my Mother in law.No its serious most aimed at the educated but its just a minority among the computer users, how many heard about Wilders or Terabyte or........,so its obvious that the majority has no reliable tools to protect themself, this is partly due to ignorance and lack of interest for their part but also the Vendors lack of communication to the general public and making the stuff easier to handle for them.

The Terabyte stuff made by Geeks for Geeks is an example[btw i have used it myself a few years ago]what is only orientated to the knowledgeable, and be happy if you are one of them but its a no go for my ten year old girl.

IFW saves grandmother from having to create a dos disk. all your hardware is detected in the 10 secs it takes to boot to dos whereas SP winpe is still booting. I could set grandmother up to have an automated restore with 1 key press with IFW. No way could i do that with ShadowProtect. The power is there. Thats just one extra way :p.

Most image software needs a practice with before you confident with it. The IFW xp wizard interface is simple. The standard default settings are enough. You just do the default and see the drives like any other image software. Saying it so complicated is unfair. The power options are there if needed but for most they not needed. If you not sure you just ask or read from the concise manual or contact there decent support. SP has more attractive graphics to pull you in but it still has settings not easily understood unless you looked them up for a unware user. Its not just for geeks. The more geeky the better for something as important as backup software. Its plain looking but its laid out good ,who cares when its reliable backup you after. Less time spent on fancy graphics and more on the machine. It never crashed on me or hung probably as its resources are so light. I think the software a bargain for the price. You don't need to learn all the commands like i say the common ones are enough. Dont knock it when it gives you such solid backup with a ton of options at a bargain price without any woes like Acronis. Acronis making backup for ages yet they messed up there boot cd on v.11. It unbelivable and for company of this magnitude and size of there userbase.

You quite misunderstood me again,i am talking from the eyes of a noope and thats most computerusers here on earth and what is obvious to you isn't that always for the others,if grandmam like to restore from dos, first she has to fiddle with BIOS to set bootpriority....what ta hell is that o_O ,then intergrating all the stuff in a bootdisk like BartPe or DosFloppy, just imagine i am not talking about you helping others but about the legions of ignorant people out there who are completely on there own to fix their stuff and forced to scare away from all these technical boo boo, because its difficult stuff,so there is quite a discrepancy of what Vendors have to offer and what anybodies grandmam can deal with.Again i am not talking about the wilders crowd who are on average in mutual agreement on essentials, its all about these who shed tears with their preinstalled heavy loaded norton and friends stuff major vendors machines crashing for no reason.

How did i not understand when you said from the view of unawares and grandmothers and I said it wasn't so hard to use for a regular joe compared to any other image software. Lets be right unaware users don't even backup let alone grandmother users etc.. They be in the same boat whatever software they use. A uninformed user (grandmother) would probably have a friend or family they give it to. I know what you getting at that image software should be alot friendlier to use and a recovery cd supplied. If bios features were easier accessed more they would screwup there pcs. You saying this software moves drive letters. No it dont. Software that mounts itself to a ram disk and pushes the other letters along does that. I'm all for making it easier. Idiot proof backup hmmmm

IFD is at least easier than other dos image softwares as it comes with decent menu. Tell me other softwares that let you browse in a menu with long filenames in dos theres not many.

I just dont get why people knock this software and support ghost then have to break sweat creating a boot disk with all the right drivers. You find people who are happy with ghost are using a old version and then you have alot less features. They then find it dont work with a certain hardware and instead of looking at better solutions they break more sweat trying to get it to work. ghost was great as nothing touched it at the time but they still keep believing it now with blinkers on. old habits die hard.

Ps. Tell your grandmother to press F8 on bootup to get the drive menu, it beats going into the bios hehe. On most computers now the cd bootable msg comes up even when not enabled in the bios and gives you that 3 sec chance. if not that it set to boot up by cd on alot pcs especially laptops now for recovery.

Just one reason this software is great. It only software that backups ALL EAZ_FIX SNAPSHOTS while in Windows!!! Beat that for backup power!!! Think about it goes so deep it even backs up protected sectors by a software that is deep already.

To clarify, did you not also inform us that we need an MBR backup/restore utility alongside IFW backing up sector-bysector in Windows to get the complete job done? Or, did I miss something? In other words, IFW alone ccannot do the job of backing up all snapshots by itself. Just want to make sure I understand things clearly. I am a fan of IFW also although I don't currently use it but I love its power and small footprint. Thanks again.

Sure but you can't take anything away from IFW the point is the power of IFW. It makes no difference no software can backup the MBR if its hiding from its usual place as thats not normal behaviour. if it was in its usual place most software could back it up. its unfair expecting it do that. the power of IFW with PHYLOCK for windows backup cannot be denied.

Was not trying to take anything away from IFW but you have clarified the answer well regarding backuping up the MBR. Thank you for that. I understand now what you are saying. Thanks again.

Sorry Mark i don't knock anything ,but computer repair shops here in my place can't keep up the pace to all the repairs to be done, its a booming business.

Don't underestimate the global collective ignorance of the crowd dealing daily with computers,as you suggest a few do backups but its a minority that do it on a regular basis, reason i guess again its too difficult with the current solutions or they didn't even know about the existence of this stuff.I don't know much about the current incarnation of the terabyte stuff but a few years ago i had a hard time myself to get it work, don't remember exactly but it had to do with the Pylock thingy,it didn't locked at all but somehow i managed to get it to work with support assistance, used it quite some time,no problems but after trialling SP from storagecraft i was quickly sold on this package, mainly for the imaging speed, unbelieveable 10 times faster as compared with IW/ID.I routinely do now a backup/restore 14 gig in 6.27 min.yes backup+restore. I guess imaging times will also better with latest Terabyte no doubt about but it will have a hard time to beat SP.

No bad feelings just saying that making this stuff from whatever vendor more userfriendly would be a huge benefit for the screaming crowd.Vendors has to call out loud that they have something to offer. If people try something its always ATI[not the best choice IMO]but on the other side its their power to make their stuff to be known by everyone.

Welcome back Hunt and Huupi :D

    @huntnyc

It nice to hear your a fan lately. All i seen is this thread mostly is IFW is too hard to use or not as fast as SP etc and less about the features or capibilities. Everybody got there favourite. I see a small band contributing and lots of lurkers. It makes me think even less are making backups. :doubt: or not giving IFW a chance. o_O

    @Huupi

It fine. no bad feeling. we just had a few heated exchanges before.

Yes but its offset against the internet where people can find the answers themselves and not pay someone if they willing. People can't afford to pay a technician for every little problem that comes up and so it turns into a larger problem. This guy said 'if i didn't know you i throw my pc in the bin.' It seems when a unaware user enters into unfamilar territory with image backup they have to learn things on there pc they would have no interest out of necessity to protect there precious data. This can be tough and draining on them already. If they had a few favourable experiences and successful backups they cling to that software as there holy grail and won't look at other softwares as it mean learning it all again. They try to compare it to there already familar software and think why change. Or they have 1 bad experience and that can be down to ignorance. It similar for users who settled with one software. 'Why change the routine.' with a bit of initial effort they can make backup alot easier. It same old story look at users pain when they lose there data yet they still wont bother backing up hence why you business is booming. great for you. I not surprised when shops charge £50 $100 to reinstall xp in 5 mins.o_O I'm sure if the image software is 20 secs faster per restore thats would work out more business at end of day. haha. When i did test with IFW 2.00 Release Candidate 3 console version then, it was as fast as DS several times over so it was no fluke. Try defragging your hard drive. Hopefully this v.2 should catch up. When i worked for company and configuring high spec pcs that were sent to magazine review. They had been tweaked so much to win the review. Sadly the customer never received the performance that the magazine received. The competition was incredible. Companys would sell pcs at a loss on certain specs. One thing i never understood and thought mad is why they didn't do much quality control. I hate to think what it be like now obviously theres more money in support nowadays.

    Anyways back on topic.

    markymoo,

The two main problems I have with IFW are

    1. The out ofthe box set up on restore with IFD/IFW does not go well with my laptop - too slow.

Solution - I guess would be adding the IFW files to my VistaPE ISO and then launch IFW from A43 file manager. If that is all I would need to do, might consider this.

    2. Automating IFW to do scheduled images inside of Windows XP si just not intuitive to me so I guess I would need to learn more about making batch files and scheduling them through the Windows task scheduler. Did try this a while back but doing things through the SP GUI is just easier.

Does not mean IFW is not a fantstic program or inferior to SP. Just means the user has to make a lot of adjustments to make the software work as they would want. As far as the core functionality of making and restoring images, it is a tremendous program.

I have been playing with IFW on and off and whilst it is a good solid program and in some instances faster than ATI, for me it lacks the facility to either search an image or mount a virtual one that you can explore.

    You got that wrong brother.

    TBIVIEW: (TeraByteImageView) See attachment
V 1.+ IFW, IFD, BING images can be browsed and files extracted and copied etc
    http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/downloads-image-for-windows.htm

Scroll down the comparison grid to "free add ons":
    http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/comparison-grid.htm

New Versions (V2) of IFW et all have new image formats and will need new TBIView and image format also not compatible with BING V1+
(waiting for BING and TBI to catch up ;) )

I can assure you the V 1+ tools still work Fine
AS I use last versions of Bing from floppy and installed IFW almost exclusively ( and have free upgrade option :D ) I am waiting for the full suite to move to V2.

    Regards

Terabyte = the sweetest tools ..even for nurf like moi. ;)

    Thanks for that

I read quickly through the manual and did not see any mention of that, but in any case I expected it to be in the same program. Will what it is like when it is released.

Longboard: can one boot a BING cd or is it just a boot manager?

And BING does partitioning + image/restore correct? And not only image a partition, but can also the whole disk + mbr ?

I don't need a boot manager, i mainly want a CD to image and restore everything reliably, and preferably partitioning as well (i can do this already, but it would be better 1 CD for all operations).
Am i looking for IFW, or BING or?

(BING - Read the first 10-15 pages of this thread, could be useful)

I trust BING and have therefor turned off Windows System Restore which I dont trust.

I have only one OS, XP Home and dont need a boot manager. I have used BING as a partition tool without any issues, really like it. For the most I use it as a imaging tool. I have CD but very seldom use it because I have BING installed in own small partition (8mb).

If you want to image the whole disk you have to do it partition by partition.

MBR - dont know much about MBR (Im far far from an expert, closer to newbie). Someone else has to help here. But as far as I can see you can backup and restore MBR.

The good thing is it works only outside Windows, does not mess with files in use. The DOS thing...no worry, you can use your mouse. I use it on a regular basis and it never disappoint me.

I find the videos very helpful.

That said I agree BING is not the most userfriendly but if I can use it anyone can :)

There are many ways to backup and restore the MBR. The easiest way is to use markymoo's MBRWhisky (enhanced) which can handle the MBR as well as the First Track (LBA-0 to LBA-62).

    @Pedro:
    Yes :)
    Yes. :)
Whole disc imaging requires some expertise/experience with Image All
    http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/kb/article.php?id=235

Tepe has dropped some good links
There are many extensive threads here re terabyte tools at wilders
    Useful info here: http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/bootit-next-generation-tutorials.htm
and some good intro stuff here
    http://www.heffy.com/image.htm

TBH I don't use EasiFix or RollBack; so much of the toing & froing re MBR back-up with DS and IFW is not relevant to me but very interesting nonetheless. Has exposed some good tools and info re Bootable PE discs.
( I'm happy with FDISR for my simple needs to date and no issues there with IFW/IFD/BING and imaging/restores)

Most of the recent threads have been about integrating the HDS clones with IFW/IFD and DriveSnapshot (FYI another really good imaging tool)

LOL :D much time spent on mine is faster than yours. :cautious:
Also really useful stuff too :)

AFAIK no one has posted as to whether BING from boot floppy or CD will in fact capture the/any modified MBR. :doubt: I suspect not as the "restore MBR" in BING is a standard MBR. I bet there are ways around that from BING.
Just of limited interest to me as end user.
    Happy to be corrected

Pedro: dl the BING trial make up the CD or floppy as per instructions, cruise around the kb and go for a spin.

    I ain't a coder or engineer.
There have been GREAT posts by serious end users here.
Be hard to find anyone who has opted for Terabyte complaining.
    May not suit everyone but....

    mata7,

As with all imaging software, you can't restore the OS partition from Windows. You will have bought IFD as well. Make a CD or floppy (using makedisk.exe) and use IFD to restore your image. The IFD files should be in
    C:\Program Files\TeraByte Unlimited\Image for Windows\V2\IFD
