The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has lifted the stop on delegating the .amazon top-level domain, effectively handing it to the company over the South American region, depending on agreement with states in the Amazon region.

Amazon in several rounds has offered ACTO Amazon Kindles “preloaded with mutually agreed upon content, and similar Amazon.com services and products in an amount not to exceed 5 million dollars.”

The concerns on the side of the Amazon countries nevertheless remain according to the communique of ICANN’s Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC).

The GAC also once more pushed the ICANN board to deal with requests from international organisations to protect their names in the new TLD space. Representatives from the industry are concerned that GAC requests with regard to IGO names and also geographical names could lead to blocking many general names in the namespace.

Amazon may finally get its hands on the .amazon top-level domain it craves, having been blocked for years by the governments of Brazil and Peru, after ICANN finally lost its patience.
Please don't make us upset you
ICANN is desperate to avoid a confrontation with governments, and in fact kowtowed to their wishes for several years, putting the .amazon application in a special no-man's-land status.

While the whole sorry affair reveals that ICANN has turned into the exact sort of organization that it was set up to avoid – one where governments get to make the decisions regardless of facts, reason, or process.

It's a name that evokes epic proportions: the world's largest rainforest; a global tech company; and now a diplomatic saga nearing its end.
This is the battle of the Amazon and it starts back in 2012.

The governments of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela - all members of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) - say that relinquishing the domain exclusively to Amazon could impact on matters of their sovereignty.
"It is a matter of sovereignty for many of us, and the offer to share the TLDs with the company Amazon Inc. is already a compromise."

Diplomats have told the BBC that they are not seeking to deny Amazon use of the domain but are proposing a "shared governance" of it.
According to their proposals, Amazon would be immediately allowed to use the domains which are relevant to its commercial interests, such as "books.amazon" or "kindle.amazon".

Amazon, the world’s biggest online retailer, is close to winning a seven-year battle with eight Latin American countries over the .amazon internet domain.
Amazon Inc has been seeking rights to the domain name since 2012. But Amazon basin countries Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana and Suriname have argued that it refers to their geographic region and should not be the monopoly of one company.

The global Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which oversees internet addresses, said on Monday it had decided to proceed with the designation requested by Amazon Inc pending a 30-day period of public comment after the eight nations bordering the world’s largest rainforest and the company failed to reach an agreement.

The presidents of Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia criticized a recent decision by the organization that manages internet protocol to grant global retailer Amazon Inc the rights to the .amazon domain.
The four leaders - Peru’s Martin Vizcarra, Colombia’s Ivan Duque, Ecuador’s Lenin Moreno and Bolivia’s Evo Morales - vowed to join forces to protect their countries from what they described as inadequate governance of the internet.

They added that Latin American and Caribbean countries agreed in 2013 to reject any attempt to appropriate the Amazon name or any other name that refers to geography, history, culture or nature without the consent of countries in the region.
Brazil, home to the largest swath of the Amazon forest, has also lamented ICANN’s decision.

Enough’s enough. That was the message from the US government this weekend at an international meeting where the creation of a new internet space – .amazon – was again the subject of heated debate.

“The United States does not support further intervention that effectively works to prevent or delay the delegation of .amazon and and we do not believe that it is required,” its representative told a meeting of governments in Montreal, Canada, organized by DNS overlord ICANN.
The intervention came after Brazil’s government representative argued that the long-running dispute between South American governments and the US online retail giant be extended again to allow for a “mutually acceptable solution” to be reached.

That negotiation has been going over for over a year with no sign of resolution but Brazil promises that this time will be different. As it did last time. And the time before that.
