Huawei pushes 5G cybersecurity with Australian government
Huawei Australia has again said it is open and transparent about cybersecurity concerns, pushing for discussions with the federal government to take part in the 5G build-out.

Chinese networking giant Huawei has published a letter it is sending to Australian members of Parliament this week, claiming recent comments made about national security concerns are "ill informed and not based on facts".

"Australians are now enjoying some of the best 4G broadband in the world because of the competition and because players like Huawei," Huawei Australia chair John Lord said.
According to Lord, Huawei is currently commissioning a paper on how much more expensive 5G network build-outs would be if Huawei is barred from taking part, adding that the company is talking to the Australian government "regularly".

Lord denied any national security concerns based on Chinese involvement in the running of its telco equipment in Australia.

Chinese phone company Huawei has been linked to a major data breach in Africa casting doubt on the company's claim there is no evidence to back up national security concerns which could see it banned from the rollout of 5G networks in Australia.

The revelations centre on an investigation by French newspaper Le Monde, published in January and later confirmed by The Financial Times, which contend confidential data from the African Union headquarters in Ethiopia was sent to Shanghai every night for five years.

The revelations come at an awkward time for Huawei, as it lobbies hard to avoid being excluded from supplying equipment to Australia's soon-to-be built 5G mobile phone networks.

National security concerns have already resulted in Huawei being shut out of Australia's National Broadband Network.

A UK government report into Huawei's broadband and mobile infrastructure equipment has concluded that it has "only limited assurance" that the kit poses no threat to national security

The investigation revealed shortcomings in the Chinese firm's engineering processes, which it said "have exposed new risks in UK telecoms networks".

Huawei is the world's biggest producer of telecoms equipment and is a major supplier of broadband and mobile network gear in Britain.
This is the UK's fourth annual report into Huawei. The previous three concluded that any risks posed by the firm to the UK's national security "had been mitigated".

Security expert and former consultant to GCHQ Alan Woodward said: "It's difficult not to conclude that Huawei appears to be falling short in doing what is required to enable the UK government to confidently give the green light to use its equipment in critical areas."

Huawei banned from 5G mobile infrastructure rollout in Australia

The Federal Government has banned Chinese-owned tech giant Huawei from taking part in the rollout of 5G mobile infrastructure over national security concerns.

Key points:

Huawei is one of the world's largest providers of telecommunications equipment

In 2012, it was banned from involvement in the NBN on the advice of ASIO

Huawei has denied it poses a national security risk and has "securely delivered wireless technology in Australia for close to 15 years"

Huawei Australia said on Twitter it was "extremely disappointed".

The Government said it would be interpreting rules announced last year as disqualifying any company that was "likely subject to extrajudicial directions from a foreign government that conflict with Australian law".

Sure would like to see a report/white paper on the findings which is raised that suspicion.

If it's authentic surely Huawei Inc has the tech know-how to bring it into compliance.

However, if it's more a political swerve to avoid a China-based telecom, which IMO must be the rub, it's much more hard to bring into compliance competing government structures.

This is to me very interesting simply because Tech-Telecom giants of any land/gov/social structure are sure to raise a fuss to higher officials and perhaps point out which is of more importance in a new century as this. Sadly, in this case, most government's lay the footprints and everything and everybody else tolls the line or else, right? Is this assumption too much of a stretch? signed:Curious.

Huawei: Australia just banned us from selling 5G tech
August 23,2018

Chinese tech company Huawei says the Australian government has blocked it from providing 5G technology for the country's wireless networks.
Huawei, one of the world's biggest makers of smartphones and telecommunications equipment, said Thursday that the government had informed it of the decision.

"This is an extremely disappointing result for consumers," the Chinese company said on Twitter. "Huawei is a world leader in 5G."
Vodafone (VOD) and Optus, two of Australia's biggest mobile phone carriers, have supplier relationships with Huawei and had previously tested the company's 5G equipment.

Vodafone's chief strategy officer in Australia, Dan Lloyd, criticized the government's announcement, saying it "creates uncertainty for carriers' investment plans."

Huawei and ZTE handed 5G network ban in Australia

Chinese smartphone maker Huawei says the Australian government has banned it from providing 5G technology for the country's wireless networks.

It said fellow communications firm ZTE had also been banned, reportedly due to national security concerns.

Huawei suggests 'a bit of xenophobia' in 5G ban

"We're doing a discussion with a bit of xenophobia around it and I think Huawei's been caught up in this which is sad for a commercial company.

"It [xenophobia] is not allowing an open debate about how we embrace these new innovations and technologies so that Australia gets the best innovation and technology.

"There's been a lot of pressure on from the US on Australia not to go ahead with Huawei. We've seen many statements out of the US and many visitors who've made that message."

Mr Lord said he learned of Huawei's ban in a telephone call on Thursday morning from the secretary of the Department of Communications shortly before a media release was issued announcing the decision.

"It was a great surprise to me," he said.

"I was very disappointed given the chaos going on in Canberra last week that such an important [decision] on 5G such as this was made in that environment."

Huawei has denied that it assisted the Chinese government in infiltrating a foreign network to gain information, following reports over the weekend to the contrary.

"Huawei categorically denies it has ever provided, or been asked to provide, customer information for any government or organisation," a Huawei spokesperson told ZDNet on Monday morning.

The denial followed reports by The Australian that it had "confirmed from a national security source" that Huawei staffers were used by Chinese intelligence to "get access codes to infiltrate a foreign network", including providing password and network details.

"We back up our infrastructure and equipment with an unblemished record of cybersecurity. We would urge any public debate on Huawei's role in providing its technology to Australia to be balanced and based on transparency and facts, rather than vague and unverified speculation."
