how to start xp pro in safe mode

    i have pressed many keys at start up such as ctrl and f8 but nothing

    happens ?

    Perhaps you are pressing it at the wrong time. Just keep pressing F8 shortly after startup (after the bios loads if I remember right). It's still the safemode key.

    Hi suzan,

    You have to press F8 repeatedly as Windows is re-starting (or starting up), and it will put you in the safe mode screen. Hitting it once will often not be enough.

    ... also, if no joy, here's a different way:

    Go to Start > Run, type Msconfig and click OK.
    Go to the Boot.ini tab.
    In Boot Options, check "Safe Boot", and press 'OK'.

    Now restart your computer. It will boot into Safe Mode.

    Do what you need to do, then go back to the Boot.ini tab, and remove the check mark at "Safe Boot" again.

    Now press OK, and restart your computer.

    Hi Suzan,

    My Sony computer, after the F8, thing brings me to a list, with everything but safe mode. I must then choose the hard drive, then press F8 again. To finally arrive in safe mode.
