After reading this article it seems like it would be a good idea to pay inside if you pull up to an "old style" pump. I am betting there is about a 0 % chance of a skimmer inside at a major size station. I am now looking specifically at whether or not the stations are using the new style. I don't have any idea yet, but I do remember using lots of vertical mounted slots, which are the old style. Thanks for the great read.
I wouldn't say the chances are anywhere near 0% when there are incidents like this: https://www.pymnts.com/news/security-and-risk/2018/aldi-credit-card-skimmer-pos-theft/ and this: https://krebsonsecurity.com/2016/05/skimmers-found-at-walmart-a-closer-look/ You're not necessarily safe anywhere.
Except that means I pay 3% more since my card gives me the 3% as a rebate on every purchase. Its safe and easy too. In reality my bank would stand fully behind any crap should it befall me, but the hassle is what I want to avoid.
