I am curious to see how many running process people here have on their machines when no other programs are running, by no other programs I mean internet browsers, chat clients, ect. Not something like an AV or FW, basically what your computer has when you first boot it up and remember minus one for the task manager. I have 19...

As we speak, 36 and CPU is wavering between 2 - 4%.

At boot I usually have 36 processes started. Most of the time I run with about 45-50 processes running.

As for the poll wondering if less than ten at boot was even possible, Black Viper stated in an interview on TechTV that only 4-7 services are necessary when booting XP. The interview was before SP2 though. Black Viper says that 40 services start by default on XP. You'll save 12-70 megabytes of RAM and lower your boot time from about 1 minute to 20 seconds if you turn off most of those services and the only one you mustn't mess with is RPC.

Last video on the page. (Any one here happen to know what has happened to BV)?

Well, I am a minimalistic person, so usually there are only between 10 and 20 processes running (because I've set few services to Manual startup type), but when I go to internet - there are more than 30 running in the end !!

I mean with all the e-mail & p2p client(s), security-related programs (I use Proxomitron with one of Firefox's accounts and DNSKong program - a caching/filtering and blocking psuedo-DNS server, see the related page on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DNSKong, oh and btw., I made the original page - heh I just needed to tell you all  ...), web-browsers, btw., I actually use three - IE, Firefox, and for the most secure browsing OffByOne browser, also see the Wiki page here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Off_By_One and optionally also the Off By One Web Browser thread that I opened on ArsTechnica forums, or very similar thread on CastleCops The most secure browser - Off By One web browser ...

    greetings, stalker
