    Hi,
How long is Gmail going to be BETA?
It's been BETA for a long time.
or... is it going to be BETA forever?
    Thanks in advance.

^ It depends entirely on google. It probably means that folks at goolge are still not entirely convinced that every aspect of gmail is good to go. They may also be planning to enhance it further. So, it is a business tactic. If something goes horribly wrong, google can always point out that gmail is still in beta stages and walk away without too much damage to its prestige.

I suspect it's pretty much the same reason, whatever that is, as every version of ICQ always having been labelled beta, at least in its pre-AOL days. I never did figure that one out.

Beta is only an arbitrary label. One companies beta is another companies release candidate in terms of defining by % of bug (critical and non-critical).
Also for a long time with the apps version of gmail its been possible to buy an SLA (Service Level Agreement) and no-one sensible would sell those unless they were confident they had a safe, stable product.

    Cheers, Nick.

See how they have to apologize now for service disruptions since leaving the beta label behind :D

Yeah Google will keep some apps in Beta for a loooong time. As long as there stable though, then everything is cool.

As long something is in beta, there will be always and excuse if something does not work... because "It's just in beta..."

It is strange that Gmail has suffered rather frequent and huge disruptions since google decided to remove the beta label from it. Could someone be deliberately causing these disruptions to discredit google?
