I am using adblock plus on google chrome, but when I disable it the pages load faster. So I think adblock plus slows down surfing. Is it better to use hosts file on Ubuntu? Does it make surfing faster?

It might be a bit faster but more difficult to manage and more difficult to customize.

There's another adblock extension. Try it [that's what I use on Chromium family because I think it's better than + version].

Hosts file are good & fast but will never block as much as these extensions.

Adblock on Chrome works fine, there is slight hit on speed but nothing that would make life bad. Just don't add too many subscription, I also use Ghostery alongwith Adblock.

It's true that the Chrome version of Adblock Plus is far behind the excellent Firefox version. For example, the list of blockable items is missing. Adblock (without Plus) is better, indeed.
