Can anyone explain what a HOSTS file is to this newbie? Does it block ads, webbugs, cookies, and hijacks? Is there a downloadable program, for Hosts file, that will do it automatically? Thanks.

More than we can explain here, as well as a handy toolkit, can be found on this site

Don't feel lonely about not knowing much about a HOSTS file. I just recently started picking up some information on what it is and how to use it. Don't know that I'd rely on it to do all things that you want. I would use a combination of tools to achieve your goal. NOTE: You will find that you can create your own HOSTS file or use HOSTS files that have been created by others. As in most software.....there comes a point when these need to be updated. You'll pick this up at the site links given.
