Does HijackThis work with Windows 7 64 bit?

 

Yes it does.

 

I have an ASUS laptop and HJT will run but will not create a log. It says it doesn't have access to the host file.

 

try running the hjt as administrator (right mouse click option)?

 

I guess it has something to do with 7. I finally dug it out of right click and now it works. Thank you.

 

I have seen some feedback on using DDS instead of HijackThis. Anyone else have thoughts on using DDS? (A reference from one cleanup guide http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic34773.html )

 

DDS lists a larger number of launch points and startup locations than HijackThis, and therefore paints a more complete picture.

Unlike HT, it does not allow you to 'fix' entries, but that might, at least in the hands of the average user, arguably speak in its favor...

 

OTL and OTS by OldTimer are great, too.

HijackThis seems to have fallen out of favour with the major malware cleaning sites. DDS and OTL are preferred over HijackThis at the moment...
