    Hi,

I contacted this site a week or so ago with problems getting rid of Downloader Revop A., and was given loads of help to sort this out.

One of the tips I was given was to install Spywareguard for added security but I am getting a constant stream of messages from it telling me there has been an attempt to change Internet Explorer settings. As soon as I restore old values and OK it, another message appears immediately.

I've done a scan with Ad-aware, and AVG as well as disabling System Restore and re-enabling after a reboot. The messages still keep on coming.

    Here's my HijackThis log:

    Hi Cosmic Cat,

    Welcome to Wilders.

Download McAfee AVERT Stinger and run. If necessary, click the Add or Browse button to add additional drives/directories to scan. By default the C: drive will be scanned. Click the Scan Now button to begin scanning the specified drives/directories.

Before you start, please unzip or move HijackThis to a separate folder of its own. The program will make backups to the folder it's in. These easily get lost in a temporary folder or a folder with other programs.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [yhklap] C:\WINDOWS\yhklap.exe

There also may be hidden files. See HERE for how to show hidden files.

Then reboot into safe mode and delete:

    C:\WINDOWS\yhklap.exe

Reboot and then post a fresh HijackThis log.

    Regards,
    Kent

    Hi Kent,

Have followed your instructions, apart from in safe mode, couldn't find C:\WINDOWS\yhklap.exe to delete. Also, I have no hidden files - I already have them all showing.

Have just rebooted from safe mode, and done a new HijackThis log (and am still getting the continuous messages from SpywareGuard, incidentally). Here's the new log:

    Hi Cosmic Cat,

What does the messages from SG say?
What are your pages trying to change to?

    Regards,

    Hello, Kent.

I get two alternating messages, one reads:

An attempt to change Internet Explorer settings has been detected

Warning! Your IE search bar has been changed!

Your Internet Explorer current user search bar has been changed from

    to
    <none>

    The second is:

An attempt to change Internet Explorer settings has been detected

Warning! Your IE search bar has been changed!

Your Internet Explorer local machine search bar has been changed from

    to
    about:blank

Then I'm prompted whether I want to restore old value (which it advises me to do), or keep new value

    Hi Cosmic Cat,

You can keep the new values for both of those as they are just default values and nothing is bad about them.

There is one more item in your HJT log you can fix.

Check the following item in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Once you fix that item and accept the "<none>" and "about:blank" in SG, you will be OK.

    Regards,
    Kent
