I started with a laptop running WinXP Home. Symptoms were the "Error Loading C:\WINDOWS\System32\bridge.dll" pop-up and an overall system slowdown. Updated Norton AV and ran that. Tried to update Windows and could only install about 3 critical updates. Uninstalled only those programs in "Add/Remove" that were obviously adware/spyware/etc.

So, I then followed the instructions on <http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=15913>. Ran Adaware with the most recent update. Ran Hijack This and got the following log file. Your help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Tim

    Hello Tim,

Let's start with the Peper Trojan you have:

    Download the following File:
    http://downloads.subratam.org/PeperFix.exe

Double CLick on it and press 'Find and Fix'.

Reboot the computer into safe mode

Run HJT again with all browsers closed and check these items and then on Fix:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RunDLL] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\System32\bridge.dll",Load
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [z4] C:\windows\temp\z4.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [2ZQLKP#2WLSCTL] C:\WINDOWS\System32\ZlwJQ.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [stcinstaller] c:\installer\id53.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AutoLoaderxw4r1JTkaRLW] "C:\WINDOWS\System32\upsole32.exe" /PC="AM.WILD" /HideUninstall
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AutoUpdater] "C:\Program Files\AutoUpdate\AutoUpdate.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [x3nX37O] upsole32.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [g047RXiml] sfmprxy.exe

Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default.
    Reset your search settings first.

Open Folder Options>view and check your settings:
    Select
    Show hidden files and folders
Display the contents of system folders
Uncheck: Hide protected operating system files
Next go to Search and scrolldown using the scroll bar on the right. Go down to More advanced options and click.
Be sure the first three boxes are selected:
    Search System folders
    Search Hidden Files and folders
    Search SubFolders

    Find and delete these files/folders:

    C:\windows\temp\z4.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\ZlwJQ.exe
    c:\installer\id53.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\upsole32.exe
    C:\Program Files\AutoUpdate ........................Folder
    sfmprxy.exe

    Now,
    1. Open My Computer
    2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
    3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
    4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
    5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
    6. A box will display the various files you can remove. Here are some safe examples:

    Temporary Internet Files
    Recycle Bin
    Temporary Files

    7. Click OK and windows will comply.

    Reboot.

Now go straight to Windows update and update Windows XP and IE. Update all critical files!!!

Run HJT again and post a new HJT log.

    Taz,

Unfortunately, PeperFix.exe did not find anything!

    >Run HJT again with all browsers closed and check these items and then on Fix:
    ....
    >Find and delete these files/folders:
I HJT'ed and Fixed everything that was on the list and deleted everything I could from the following list.

    >2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
    Done.

    >Now go straight to Windows update and update Windows XP and IE. Update all critical files!!!
I tried and no dice! AARRGGHH!

I'm not getting the bridge.dll error pop-up and several issues have been cleared up, but this laptop is still messed up! I'll post the current HJT log in the next message.

    Thanks again,
    Tim

    Hello,

Ok, what I would like you to do is run HJT again and check these items and then on Fix:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Mabndqdt] C:\documents and settings\katka\local settings\temp\Mabndqdt.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Mabndqdt.exe] C:\documents and settings\katka\local settings\temp\Mabndqdt.exe

    Reboot.

Run HJT again and post me a new log.

Also, there is another log that I would like to see:

Copy the contents of the quote box to Notepad.
    Name the file Appinit.bat
    Save as type All Files
    Save on the Desktop.

    Double click on Appinit.bat
This will create a file on the desktop named windows.txt
Copy and paste that log here.

    Hello,

Do you use Netzero as your homepage?

Run HJT again and check these items and then on Fix:

    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {120E090D-9136-4b78-8258-F0B44B4BD2AC} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ms.exe (file missing)

    Reboot.

    The saga continues...

    Taz,

    >Do you use Netzero as your homepage?
The laptop owner uses Netzero for 'net access so Netzero is her homepage.

    >Run HJT again and check these items and then on Fix:
    ...
    Done.

Unfortunately, I still cannot update Windows. Something nasty must still be lurking on this PC. Below is the most recent HJT log.

Thanks again and again and again,
    Tim

    Hello,

What exactly happens when you go to Windows Update? Do you get a message, and if so, what exactly does it say?
