    Hi,

This is the first time I've posted a log. Spyguard caught the browse hijacker but couldn't get rid of it.

I d/l and ran SpyBot, which was clean.
I ran CWShredder, but I don't think I let it do anything.
I was a bit confused with it.

(Do you keep a resident SPYware program running in tasks?) If so which one?

(I was using SPYGUARD, but since I just put in this new winxp and didn't notice it wasn't running until I ran a regular scan with it. It's now corrupt, I think my fault.) I also told Spyguard to delete an dll entry that I probably shouldn't have, but I didn't know better at the time.

I've noticed other logs where you tell people to delete. Since this is my first time, I really need a hand holding in understanding when you say which line, etc.

    Thanks for your help! :)

no signs of anything obvious in the log
are you having a particular problem or were you just checking

it's always worthwhoile running full scans with spybot & adaware as described here

Download and unzip or install these programs/applications if you haven't already got them. If you have them, then make sure they are updated and configured as described

    Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de
    AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

    Run Sybot S&D

After installing, first press Online, press search for updates, then tick the updates it finds, then press download updates. Beside the download button is a little down pointed arrow, select one of the servers listed. If it doesn't work or you get an error message then try a different server

Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, press 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED.

    then reboot &

    Run ADAWARE

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
the current ref file should read at least 01R302 03.05.2004 or a higher number/later date

    Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

    then......

click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

    then.........

go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ...........then........"Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press next and then say yes to the prompt, do you want to remove all these entries.

    reboot again

Turn off system restore by following instructions here
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039

That will purge the restore folder and clear any malware that has been put in there. Then reboot & then re-enable sytem restore & create a new restore point.

Read here https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=27971 for info on how to tighten your security settings and how to help prevent future attacks.

Hi, Thanks for all your help.

I did all the steps, (except turn off restore step). When I ran spybot all is clear. But on running AdAware it found what (SPYware Guard) had found. An attempted browswer hijacking. I let Adaware delete them and restarted sys. I ran Adaware again, and it shows that it is gone.

However, when browser opens, it is attempting to hijack my browser to:
    http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&clcid=0x0409&pver=6.0&ar=home

I have been able to stop before it goes. This looks like the same url SpyGuard could not remove, which was my initital letter asking for help. (Spy Guard is now corrupt, and I need to get a new one.)

So, my browser has been hijacked I think. I ran another hijackthis shown below. I hope it helps. thanks, -taperino

that is the standard inbuilt setting for any version of IE

the way to overcome that is open IE, go to the website you want to be your home page and then click on tools/options/general tab and select use current for home page options

any time you use HJt to fix a hijacked page it will automatically set it back to M$ defaults

    Dear DVK,

Hi. I got the RAM added, and am having start up problems. They (best buy) is saying, to slide the memory back and forth a bit to break it in. (Yikes!)

Meanwhile - Everytime I run Adaware and delete that "Possible Browser Hijack", I should just let it delete it, and not worry about it. It doesn't delete.

IF I can keep the system running I should do the restore process you told me to do now?

    Thanks, taperino

Just don't delete the possible browser hijack with adaware, just ignore it
