    Hi Everyone,

I have lost my search capability and don't know what to do. I used to be able to type whatever into my MSN Homepage address bar but now I can't. A friend told me to get this HiJack program and run it and post to see if anyone could find something wrong. I sure would appreciate anyone looking at it for me. Thanks so much. :)

    Hi Sammi,

    Welcome at Wilders. :)

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Thank You for the welcome and for your help Pieter... :)

I did as you suggested and placed a checkmark on each of the items you said and clicked on the Fix Checked button. I'm really glad those are gone now. I had hoped getting these removed would fix my search problem but it didn't. I still cannot do a search from the address bar. I searched Google for "can't search from address bar" and found this site talking about the same problem I am having. http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?showtopic=3893 in the 14th post down is a link to a IE registry search fix and downloaded it. It is suppose to restore all the default Search settings for IE. It didn't work for me. I know this probably seems like such a small problem to you compared to others your helping and it is something that I could live without but I really miss being able to search from the address bar. Would you have any suggestions that I could try?

Thank you so much for helping me. :)

    Hi Sammi,

Could you please post a new HijackThis log?
Maybe I can figure out what went wrong.

    Hi Sammi,

    Please try this

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us6.hpwis.com/
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank

Then with all IE windows still closed used the IEFix file you found at Net-Integration.

Then reboot and let us know if that did it.

    Regards,

    Pieter

    Thank you so much Pieter

You are brillant. I'm so happy to have this fixed. My searching from the address bar is working perfectly again. I can't thank you enough for your time.

    :)

    Hi Pieter,

I still can search from the address bar until I run Spybot. Spybot finds these entries:

    CoolWWWSearch.0008k: URL Search Hook
    HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1729697498-776746741-195485210-1003\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks

    PeopleOnPage.AproposMedia:Application ID
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ApplD\{D0565000-9DF4-11D1-A281-00C04FCA0AA7}

    PeopleOnPage.AproposMedia: Class ID
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D0565000-9DF4-11D1-A281-00C04FCA0AA7}

When I click on "Fix selected problem" it does delete the entries but then my being able to search from the address bar is lost. I have to run the IE Registry fix again to get the searching capability back and that in turn puts this same CoolWWWSearch and PeopleOnpage entries back. All of the info I have found about these entries says their something bad that I do want to delete. So, my question is: how can I delete them and still be able to search from the address bar? Or is it safe to keep these entries? Is it safe to exclude them from further spybot searches? I'm at a loss. I keep going in circles with this and don't know what to do.

I sure would appreciate any suggestions.

    Thanks

I thought since u mentioned a CWS infection that CWShredder would have found something.

Iam not experienced enough with HJT to advise u any further so just be patient and one of the experts will be along to give u further recommendations.

Sorry i couldn't be of more help :(

Ok, I'll check back alittle bit later.

I also thought for sure the CWShredder would have found something, especially since one of the entries is named CoolWWWSearch. I just don't understand. o_O

Thanks for your time helping me, snowbound. :)

    Hi Sammi,

Please surf to http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/ and scroll down to
    Registry Search Tool
    Download, unzip and run RegSrch.vbs
Copy and paste this in the dialog box: URLSearchHooks

After a while a prompt will come up. Click OK to write the results to wordpad and post them.

    Regards,

    Pieter

    HI Pieter,

I downloaded the registry search tool and it found nothing. I believe I know what my problem is now. It looks like there was a bug in the beta download of Spybot and I used it. Reading here: http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?showtopic=9970 seems exactly like my problem, about CoolWWWSearch.008k, missing search hooks. Then something about false positives for Spybot here: http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?showtopic=9877. I don't know what to do other than wait for the fix and leave the CoolWWWSearch.008k entry in spybot until them. i can't fix one without messing up the other. If theres something else I can do before that please let me know.

    Thanks :)

    Hi Sammi,

No offense to you or Patrick, but better leave the beta updates of Spybot S&D for what they are.
Update when they have been tested and are released as final.

    Regards,

    Pieter
