Using Macrium v. 8.0.6329 (UEFI) on Windows 10 Home edition with an internal 128 GB SSD containing the Windows OS and an internal 1TB HDD for storage. For backing up both drives I have been selecting "Image selected disks on this computer" for periodic backups to a USB thumb drive, but wondering if by so doing I am failing to create an image of the partition(s) required to backup and restore windows. If that is the case do I need to create two separate backups: one selecting "Create an image of the SSD partition(s) required to restore windows" and a second just for the 1TB HDD selecting "Image selected disk(s) on this computer"

Hoping someone can kindly explain what I should do - my familiarity with the free version of Macrium is primarily at the novice level and 2 weeks away from my 90th birthday.

    Thanks in advance

    Frank

Hi Frank! As long as both drives (the SSD and the 1tB HDD) have check marks in their selection while in the "Select Source Drive(s) & Partitions" screen, they both will be backed up accordingly, incl. everything needed to reconstruct your BOOT disk.

Thanks for the response - if I understand your comment I can continue to use the Macrium selection "Image selected disks on this computer" for periodic backups to a USB thumb and I that will allow me to be able to restore windows from the backed up SSD? Is this correct or am I confused?
BTW I am not a politician but often have similar defects.

Oops I read your response from my email and for some reason it did not include the last few line" incl. everything needed to reconstruct your BOOT disk" which appears in the thread itself. Do I need to create a new boot disk somehow using the newly created backup. Confused here again?

No new BOOT disk is needed... that's what your current SSD is used for. As I mentioned, if you have both of your disks (and all of their partitions) included in your image (that's what that single CheckMark is for in the screen mentioned above), all the necessary partitions are included in case you ever need to reconstruct that SSD which is currently your BOOT/Windows OS disk.

The "Image selected disk" option is for use when MANUALLY selecting sub-sets of your disk partitions for backup. The "Create an image... backup and restore Windows" option is for users to let Macrium REFLECT select just the needed partitions to backup what's needed to restore yiur Windows partitons as well the the ability for that disk to BOOT properly. Most uninformed users have no idea exactly what pieces of a disk are required to insure, after a restoration, a successful BOOT of a Windows System... REFLECT does and will do it for you if that's all you want to have in a needed image.

In your case you're imaging both that requirement as well as your DATA disk... which is also fine.
