Help needed with Hijack this log.

    I run AVG on my comp and I keep getting AVG Resident Shield popup stating that I have Trojan Horse Revop.C Virus on my system. I ran AVG and quarrantined it as I could not delete. I also ran Adaware6 and Spybot, but this annoying trojan keeps reappearing in different places. Please can someone help me out here, to get rid of this pest. Here is my Hijack this log.

    Hi anais4uk,

    Welcome to Wilders.

    Before you start, please unzip or move HijackThis to a separate folder of its own. The program will make backups to the folder it's in. These easily get lost in a temporary folder or a folder with other programs.

    Check the following items in HijackThis.
    Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = ,
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = ,
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,(Default) = ,
    O2 - BHO: myBar BHO - {0494D0D1-F8E0-41ad-92A3-14154ECE70AC} - C:\Program Files\MyWay\myBar\1.bin\MYBAR.DLL

    O3 - Toolbar: My &Search Bar - {0494D0D9-F8E0-41ad-92A3-14154ECE70AC} - C:\Program Files\MyWay\myBar\1.bin\MYBAR.DLL

    There also may be hidden files. See HERE for how to show hidden files.

    Then reboot into safe mode and delete:

    C:\Program Files\MyWay\ <-- entire folder
    C:\PROGRA~1\grid math base\ <-- entire folder
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\l_anets.exe

    Reboot.

    To clean out your System Restore, do the following:

    Turn OFF System Restore.
    1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    2. Click Properties.
    3. Click the System Restore tab.
    4. Check the box beside "Turn off System Restore".
    5. Click Apply, and then click OK.
    6. Restart the computer. (You must restart your computer to clear the old Restore Points)

    To Turn System Restore back ON.
    1. Follow the above Steps 1 to 3
    2. UNcheck the box beside "Turn off System Restore".
    3. Click Apply, and then click OK.
    4. Restart your computer.
    5. Then CREATE a new restore point.

    Now try a full system scan with your AV and see if it finds anything.

    Post your scan results back here along with a fresh HijackThis log.

    Thank you puff-m-d for the welcome and the help you offered. I followed your instructions through to the end and after rescanning with AVG it picked up 2 files that were still infected with Revop.C. I was recommended to move the 2 files to virus vault, which I did, and here is my new HJT log:

    boot into safe mode by following instructions here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406
    then as some of the files or folders you need to delete may be hidden do this:
    Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

    Run hijackthis, tick these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [spam fast] C:\PROGRA~1\GRIDMA~1\Once blah.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ompstuic] C:\WINDOWS\System32\ompstuic.exe

    Delete these files

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\ompstuic.exe

    and Delete these folders
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\GRIDMA~1\ <<<<<< the folder containing Once blah.exe

    reboot and post a new log

    you seem to have a morphing file there and if it comes back again after this fix we need to use a diffferent way to fix it

    Thanks dvk01, I followed your instructions but I couldnt delete the file and folder as I couldnt find them. I used windows explorer to search for them but they werent there. Here is my new log:

    You will need to kill a process and remove the file that goes with it.

    In your latest log that would be the one I bolded:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [InCD] C:\Program Files\Ahead\InCD\InCD.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [pnotifym] C:\WINDOWS\System32\pnotifym.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\System32\ctfmon.exe

    As you may have noticed every time you reboot this file gets renamed.
    So please post a log and don't reboot or look at the log and find the new filename yourself. It will always be in the same following order, so unless you made major changes it will be between InCD and CTFMON.EXE

    Manually: bring up TaskManager (f.e. by using Ctr-Alt-Del) In the processes tab find the process you want to kill, select it and EndTask.

    Then find the file and remove it.

    Automated: download, unzip and run:
    http://download.broadbandmedic.com/VbStuff/KillBox.zip

    In the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste the full path to the file you want o get rid of.
    As an example from your last log:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\pnotifym.exe
    Then click on the Kill this file button and wait for the prompt.
    If you are told you need to reboot, do so.

    Strange :doubt: I killed the file like you said, but when I scanned with HJT it was still there, so I rebooted did another scan and there it is again (O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mifsf] C:\WINDOWS\System32\mifsf.exe). I opened task manager but the file could not be found in the process tab o_O Can you throw any light on the matter please?

    I would do another scan to make sure.
    Most likely some copies may be stored in your Restore Points if you are using System Restore.
    And one should be in the C:\Submit\[date(today)] folder.
    All harmless if everything worked as planned by the way.
    And have HijackThis Fix this line if it is still there:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mifsf] C:\WINDOWS\System32\mifsf.exe

    This is sooooo wiered. I turned off system restore, did another scan, the file showed up, pasted file name into killbox, but killbox said the file does not exist, and it does not show up in task manager?

    Ive made a new restore point. Rebooted. Scanned again and everything seems to be ok so far..................... I will keep an eye on things because over the last couple of days I have thought that I have blasted the virus but it kept reappearing.........I will keep you posted with events. I am going to be offline over the weekend so it may get Monday before I post again.

    Here we go again! Been offline over the weekend and when I boot up computer, I am now getting runtime error in IE6............My son has been using the comp while I have been away and I havent had chance to ask him about this new problem yet. I did a new HJT log and fixed the suspicious file which was O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [New.net Startup] rundll32 C:\PROGRA~1\NEWDOT~1\NEWDOT~2.DLL,NewDotNetStartup but I cannot kill it with Killbox as Killbox says file does not exist.........When I get the runtime error IE shuts down.     then as some of the files or folders you need to delete may be hidden do this:
    Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

    Download and unzip or install these programs/applications if you haven't already got them. If you have them, then make sure they are updated and configured as described

    Run Sybot S&D

    After installing, first press Online, press search for updates, then tick the updates it finds, then press download updates. Beside the download button is a little down pointed arrow, select one of the servers listed. If it doesn't work or you get an error message then try a different server

    Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, press 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED.

    then reboot &

    Run ADAWARE

    Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
    the current ref file should read at least 01R302 03.05.2004 or a higher number/later date

    Then ........

    Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
    From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

    then......

    click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

    then.........

    go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ...........then........"Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

    then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

    Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

    When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press next and then say yes to the prompt, do you want to remove all these entries.

    reboot again

    then post a new hijackthis log to check what is left

    Right completed all your instructions dvk01 heres my new log file, but a couple of questions please just so I can understand what I am doing:

    1. Why did I have to go into safe mode to delete those folders?

    2. Is there anyway of stopping this Revop.C pest from keep comming back?

    Ok I found this link for Revop.C virus http://it.trendmicro-europe.com/ent...etail.php?id=58471&VName=TROJ_REVOP.C&VSect=O it says -

    To remove the malware registry key:

    Still in the Registry Editor and in the left panel, double click the following:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>
    Windows>CurrentVersion>Explorer>pup
    Still in the left panel remove select then delete the subkey pup
    Close Registry Editor.

    Does this mean I delete the Pup folder I found in the left panel of Reg Edit. I am scared to delete this without further knowledge. I need the all clear from someone please.

    Hi Anais,

    Copy the part in bold below into notepad and save the file as winpup.reg

    REGEDIT4

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\comms]

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\pup]

    Then doubleclick the file and confirm you want to merge it with the registry.
    That will do it for you and take out the other key as well.
