I need advice on how to remove 1stbar.b downloader virus/trojan. It's on my sons PC who lives 1200 miles from me. He has the free AVG a/v, but tells me that it will not take care of the virus. It's on a PC running XP home. Any help will be very much appreciated.

Hi casp99, welcome to the forum :)

Have your son read this page from Symantics about Downloader.Trojan

    http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/downloader.trojan.html

He will have turn off his System Restore, then run his anti-virus scan again in "Safe Mode" to remove all the files detected as Downloader.Trojan.

There are instructions at the above link to show him how to turn off System Restore and how to run his system in Safe Mode.

i would try the above first, then i would do a scan with HijackThis to see if there is anything else lurking. You can get HijackThis from here: http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/

There are instructions there to follow, but do not have him *fix* anything yet that HijackThis lists as most things listed are needed and not harmful. You could have him post his HijackThis log (save it and copy and past it here) so the experts can have a look and advise him what might still need to be fixed.

    Found more on 1stBar
    http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/darnit_2.htm

You may be able to remove part of 1stBar through the Add/Remove utility on the computer if he can find it listed there. If not, then after he has done a scan with his Antivirus in Safe Mode, i would suggest he download either Spybot Search & Destroy, or AdAware, either one will detect and remove 1stBar.

    AdAware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
