"Huge HBO hack sparks fears emails could be leaked as company enlists FBI...

The huge amount of data speculated to be involved in the hack is seven times the amount that was leaked in the Sony Pictures hack of 2014,..

The level of data taken also indicates that audio and video has been stolen, meaning episodes of shows like Game Of Thrones could be leaked online..."

" ' To put in context the 1.5 terabytes [of stolen HBO data]...

...CEO of security firm Vera, 'The entire Library of Congress ** is estimated to contain 10 terabytes of print content. As such, it’s hard to believe that video and/or audio are not part of what was stolen. It will be interesting — and terrifying to HBO and their parent, Time Warner — to see what comes out.'...”

"At Fort Meade, sitting on the 100-acre lot, are 35 structures including the Library of Congress Book Storage Facility,...

As the Library of Congress collection grows, so does its need for more storage space since it receives approximately 250,000 new items every year. The Book Storage Facility currently consists of four book 'modules,' with planning for a fifth module underway and potential expansion to a total of 13 modules. The modules boast 35-foot high ceilings with rows of book shelves that reach 30 feet...

Given the height of the shelves, workers often have to use specialized lifts to retrieve items..."

"HBO chief reassures staff: Emails not likely leaked in hack

Posted on August 2, 2017 at 4:00pm EDT

"...In an email from chairman Richard Plepler sent to HBO staff just moments ago, the executive wrote: “As promised, I wanted to update you on our recent cyber incident and where we currently stand. There has been and will continue to be an enormous amount of speculation in the media. It is important to understand that, as is often the case, things you read may very well not be true. Many people have expressed particular concern about our e-mail system. At this time, we do not believe that our e-mail system as a whole has been compromised, but the forensic review is ongoing..."

The most common figure for the ransom most frequently being thrown around by the media is $7 Million in Bitcoin.

After hacker paid income taxes that would come to approx. $7 Million in Bitcoin.

"...In a five-minute video letter from someone called “Mr Smith”, the hackers told the company to pay within three days or they would reveal more HBO shows and confidential corporate information. Additionally, they would only deal directly with HBO CEO Richard Plepler and only send one letter detailing how to pay...

Although the amount of money wasn't specified, the hackers demanded “our six-month salary in bitcoin”, claiming they "earn" $12 million to $15 million a year from blackmailing other organizations they've compromised. HBO is apparently the 17th target of this hacker group with only three companies refusing to pay..."
