Letter from my sister and her husband who are currently again this year
teaching school over in China...thought you all might enjoy it.

    ;)

    Dear Everyone,

Well, another Thanksgiving Day has arrived and it is a good time to
think about all the blessings of life this year and in years past.
Here in Guangzhou we are enjoying a pleasant day with the high
predicted to be 75, the low this morning was 59. Even without heat
to take the chill off in the morning, these temperatures are
wonderful compared to three weeks ago.

Today we don't have any classes. Our contract allows us to take
today off if we make up the classes we would miss. Some of our
patriots have taken off to see parts of China for an extended weekend
and will make their classes up in the evening next week. Carole
collected papers that need correcting so we have opted to stay put.
That doesn't mean we have to stay home without any celebrations.
This evening we will go to a "Tex-Mex" eatery for a full turkey
dinner with all the "fixin's." Andrew and Irene Tang (ERRC
colleagues) and two of their friends will join us for a fun evening.

Last night Carole suggested I write a note to everyone wishing you a
happy Thanksgiving. When I asked her what I could write about, she
    had no shortage of ideas.
Her ideas included: a lock on our front door, electrical power most
of the time, circuit breakers, internet connections, shoe strings,
mosquito net, washing machine, water drains, potable water, computer
hard drive, hot water heater and ceiling light fixtures. All of the
aforementioned "things" have been problematic to some degree or
another during our brief tenure this year.

As you may know, I made a deal with Carole before coming to China.
If she would teach all the written English classes, I would teach all
the oral English classes. In addition, I am the "house boy" and
must do all the washing, cleaning and general maintenance of the
apartment. On Wednesday mornings Carole has class from 0800 to 1140.

I am free! It is a perfect time interval for me to get all the sheets
washed, floors swept and wet mopped, dishes done bed made up with
clean sheets etc. We only have one set of sheets so it is a bit of a
trick to get them dry and the bed made before she gets back. We must
air dry everything from a rail that hangs on a little balcony just
outside our living room "picture" window and you have to dry one
sheet at a time as the width of the sheet is about the width and
    height of our window.

Yesterday, Wednesday, things were going smoothly until 0900 when the
electric power went off. The first sheet was washed and on the rail,
the second in the washer full of water. I was washing my Reebok's in
a bucket of water in the bathroom using that great Mexican soap,
Maximo, along with a good stiff scrub brush. The place was dark,
especially with the sheet covering the one sizable window in the
apartment. The water was very dirty and full of soap suds so put my
Reebok's in the sink and poured the waste water hastily down our only
major drain in the house, the toilet. Just as I was emptying the
last pint of water out of the bucket, I remembered my shoe strings
were in the bottom of the bucket! Hope against hope I plunged my
hand into the toilet as far as I could reach hoping to retrieve those
precious strings, but they were gone. I had that sinking feeling like
I had lost my checkbook or car keys. To make sure the shoe strings
were "good and gone" I filled my bucket with 3 gallons of water and
gave the toilet one" big shot" hoping that this would bid the
strings a final farewell. Thankfully it appears to have worked.

Carole encouraged me when she got home to the bad news. "Sweetheart,
I think you can get them at Park 'n Shop." I was encouraged. Park 'n
Shop is a Wal-Mart type store out of Hong Kong that is about a 25
minute walk from here. After lunch I took off and it was a
disappointment. In such a huge store, they only had 30+ packets of
one selection of shoestring and it was for a petite ladies shoe.
Carole and I had worked on my Chinese before I left so I could show
them the shoestring on my shoe and point to it and say "Wa yao jiga"
meaning "I want this," and then say "Sai na li," where is
    it?
Looking around the stores at Park 'n Shop was to no avail, just got
the reply "meyo," we don't have it. Finally I hopped a bus going to
a huge shopping center about 3 miles away. Looking in every store that
sold athletic shoes, I got the same answer "meyo, meyo, meyo." Two
hours had passed and I was feeling a little like Jonah. Giving up on
the shopping center I found an entrance to the new subway that will
be operating next year. Descending into the "bowels of the earth"
there are many little boutiques that sell specialty items. Several of
these stores sell athletic shoes but the answer was
always "meyo." Finally, I was about ready to give up and found one
last little store that had athletic shoes. Sure enough, they had
three pairs of shoestrings in stock and they were white, the right
length and only 5 yuan ($0.40US). 2.5 hours later I was the happiest
guy in Guangzhou, thankful for a pair of shoestrings! When I got
back to the apartment, I was thankful I had such a dear wife who
corrected papers all that time, thankful she is willing to make
good "deals" with me and thankful she is always encouraging me! Our
relationship is so much more important than shoestrings..

    HAPPY THANSGIVING!

    Bob
