How do I know when someone is trying to hack into my computer? Do I need software to tell me or will the computer stop working, make a noise, etc....?

If you have the necessary security software installed and you take safety precautions on the internet and update your computer regularly, you should be safe from hacking.
If you're hacked, I think you'll see your computer behaving strangely.

  5. I guess it depends a lot on your ability to detect the strangeness of your computer. Depends on the purpose of the attacker, they can be very quiet indeed.

Check the logs of your firewall/IDS if you have one. Try the logs of your antivirus (NAV/Mcafee/PcCillin/Panda 2005 versions and their corp. editions - they should pop alerts too)
